I imagine it'd be really awkwardly silent, like if you joined a book club where you don't know anybody and you're all just kind of sitting there, with some soft elevator muzak playing in the background.

I believe that hell is other people, so it's an eternity of trying to talk your way out of a a speeding ticket, explain suspicious text messages to your SO and being lectured on everything by your mother in law.

My interpretation of a book formed from several varied sources in various languages selected or even written by a bunch of Romans dependent on how well the writings fit their agenda at the time and then translated back and forth through multiple languages and edited to fit the current views of the current interpreter once again is the right one!  No one else's interpretation of a book formed from several varied sources in various languages selected or even written by a bunch of Romans dependent on how well the writings fit their agenda at the time and then translated back and forth through multiple languages and edited to fit the current views of the current interpreter once again is right!

In other news:

I was looking down the list of threads, and I read this thread title as "Westboro Baptist Church kills at Comic-Con" for some reason (despite reading the thread title "correctly" (it misses a p ;)) many times before now). It's probably a prediction that will come true.

It's because I'm tired. Man I need sleep. I'm at 22 hours without sleep now. I'll probably reach 34 before going to sleep. I haven't gone without sleep for this long in years. (I love my sleep when I can get it)

Um... no.  I was just commenting on the ridiculousness of organized religion and being obsessed with what's in the bible.  What's written in the bible is what the people who wrote it wanted to be in there.  If any of the stuff they were writing about was really true, it's been distorted by centuries of Bias, Editing, and mistranslation, so getting all worked up about it is stupid.

Not really. Believe me, you don't want to know what happens to people who purposely distort the Bible, and copies of Bibles get scrapped for so much as having a misspelling. And of the course there is SOME bias among the apostles' writings, because they are writing to different audiences. For example:

Matthew wrote to Jews, who were expecting a physical king. Therefore, he presented him as a kingly figure who spoke of his coming "kingdom of heaven". Mark, on the other hand, wanted to present his more humble qualities, and focused on his image as that of a Servant. Luke wrote of Jesus as the Son of Man, as God who came to earth in human form. John, as Luke's opposite in a sense, wrote of Jesus as the Son of God, focusing more on his deity than his humanity.

Although the Romans had one hell of an editing session on it before converting.  All the apostles except the 4 we now know were removed, for a start.

Those were removed because those apostle writings made some strange claim that made no sense given the nature of the Old Testament and present writings. For example, I think it was the book of Thomas that made all these strange, druid sort of claims that horribly contradicted both the other books and the Old Testament. Others, such as the books of Peter and Mary, were attributed to people simply on the grounds of "these people are famous, they will get us noticed."

Well, that depends on your beliefs. If it's a really minor thing I believe that God will take you aside and say "Listen, this is no reason to send you to hell. Just apologize and we're cool."

Given the Old Testament law code that was supposed to have been given by him, I doubt it. There are punishments for many things, far and wide, almost all of which are death.

Quote
If you're talking about not believing in Christ, well, my pastor equates it to going to the doctor's office, and the doctor says "Sir, you're very sick, but it's treatable if you take this medicine." But then you say "But I don't want this medicine, I'll find a better way to get cured." And then when you die from your illness, you seem so surprised even though you were given a very simple cure, but refused to accept it.

I equate it to mafia extortion, myself. "That's a nice immortal soul you have there. It would be a shame if it were, say, tortured forever and ever in a lake of fire. Perhaps you just go and devote your life and mind to me, so we can forget this conversation ever happened?"

Quote
As for hell itself, some of the churches I know vary whether hell is a fiery hole, or varied to suit your sin. Like if you were a thief all you're life I imagine hell as being placed in a museum of priceless artifacts from all throughout history, each one worth more money than you can spend in a lifetime. Only problem is, you're totally surrounded by laser wires and if you move even an inch you're caught and brutally beaten by dozens of armed guards. If you were Hitler, on the other hand, I think you'd be forced to live through the Holocaust once in the shoes of every man, woman, and child you sent to die. And then when that's done he can live through the lives of every German soldier he sent to die on the frontlines. If he runs out of people after that then he can spend eternity in a hall of mirrors with the ugliest, most Jewish (in his eyes) face one can have.

For the thief, a much better punishment would be to have hell be a land where he owns everything and there is no security of any kind. Why? There's nothing to steal, the action that brought him a rush of excitement. Even if the security system is truly and utterly impossible, he still has an eternity to try.

Maybe you should reword that. Peter and Mary are famous because of the Bible, they didn't make the Bible famous.

The writings were around relatively soon after Jesus died, the big thing is that people wrote those sorts of books hoping to gain some credibility with Jesus' followers based on the belief that they would automatically believe anything with an apostle or other important person's name on it.

Actually, the book of Mark was written about 70 years after the birth of Jesus (and forty years after the crucifixion). It was the Pauline Church which put together the New Testament, but this argument is for another thread.
