Actually, the book of Mark was written about 70 years after the birth of Jesus (and forty years after the crucifixion). It was the Pauline Church which put together the New Testament, but this argument is for another thread.

70 years is relatively soon considering the 2000 (or thereabouts) year history of the church.

Relatively soon. I've seen accounts from every historian and their grandmother that put the book of Mark anywhere from 30 to 100 years after Jesus died. The big point of it is that some of the apostles or Jesus' witnesses would still have been around to call out any inconsistencies in those books. Other books, such as the ones I mentioned, were written well over a hundred years after the big guy's death. So they would be far more likely to be allowed to persist with large errors, as no one could stop them and say "this is all wrong".

@Leafsnail Don't put words in my mouth. Based on what information the people who created the New Testament had to work with, they chose the books that created the most sensible picture and removed any books that contradicted each other, or just plain made no sense, such as Thomas.

Yes, as interesting as the point is, I don't think it's a good idea to discuss it in this thread. A new atheist thread has just sprung up and from what I've read so far

As I said though, this is a topic for another thread though, so let's not make this thread stray too far, and since there are people who are going to comic-con on these forums, we might get firsthand reports on whether these guys are effective at all.

Was this a typo? Because I'm willing to bet we can make it stray pretty damn far.

It was more to say that it has been arbitrarily edited, rather than as a general criticism.

Yes, yes it was. Or maybe it was a Freudian slip :P
Anyway, I'll fix it up in a sec, so thanks for letting me know.

Really, I don't even get the Westboro Baptist Church other than the fact that they're absolutely batshit insane.

Well, they have to dedicate their life to something... to validate their existence.

Lashing out at stuff they don't like and are ignorant of in the name of god gives them that validation.

So here is an update: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/07/pick_your_comic_book_gods.php
There is something very important there that I didn't know.Fred Phelps will sue you if he has a chance to, so if you are going to make fun of him, be careful. The last thing we need are bay12vers going to court over this (Not that many of us have expressed wanting to do). Also, the link has a link to a list of comic book gods worth worshiping, just in case you want to use that.

So, I found out I was wrong about the Hell's Angels before. The actual motorcycle group that has been blocking the WBC is the Patriot Guard Riders, although they do accept non-motorcycle owners.

I also found out that Fred Phelps is a Democrat, and my mind folded in on itself.

In addition, there is somwhat recent news on the lawsuit against the WBC by Albert Snyder, father of LCpl Matthew A. Snyder, who's funeral was picketed by the WBC.

Quote from: Wikipedia
An appeal by WBC was heard on September 24, 2009. The federal appeals court ruled in favor of Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church, stating that their picket near the funeral of LCpl Matthew A. Snyder is protected speech and did not violate the privacy of the service member's family, reversing the lower court's $5 million judgment.[75] On March 30, 2010, the federal appeals court ordered Albert Snyder to pay the court costs for the Westboro Baptist Church, an amount totaling $16,510.[76] Political commentator Bill O'Reilly agreed on March 30 to cover the costs, pending appeal.
