A more detailed view of the embark location:


For some reason PnrtScrn didn't pick up the X's...

For anyone else genning this world & looking for this Region, it's 1-Left of the Red Sand icon on the World Map.

Edit: More usefully, go to the bottom right of the World Map & Region Map (i.e. x,y = 0,0) & repeat Shift+Up & Shift+Right 9 times (each).

When I first saw this thread and gave this location a try, my first thought was to have an antechamber at the entrance, on the SW most likely, where the defenses would be located.  After this would be the actual entrance to the fort which would be 4-5 z-levels under the level of the major river and involve a walkway through the actual waterfall into the fort proper.  Aside from being awesome (imo) it would give my dwarves constant happy thoughts from the waterfall.  I haven't gotten around to actually trying it yet, but my fear is that it would only succeed in washing dwarves off the bridge into the river below.

Even more awesome would be to build some kind of retractable cover for the walkway a few z-levels above that would split the waterfall to going on either side of the walkway.  Think that scene in The Incredibles where the waterfall opens up to let the little shuttle car through.  This could also be part of the defense - retract the covering and any invaders on your walkway get washed off into the river below.

But I have no idea how to go about doing this.... ideas?

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

grates for a floor so the water goes through? that should at least prevent the water from pushing dorfs off the bridge, no?

I'm not sure.  The question is how to build it in the first place without your masons getting washed overboard.  My best idea so far is to try to dam up the whole river while construction is progressing and then destroy the dam to let the water back through.  Not sure I have the patience for that though.

Well you could try redirecting the river temporarily, it's what I did to make a causeway. I dug under one of the rivers, sent it where I wanted it to go, dug up-stairs into the level above, and then somehow my miners were able to dig downstairs to meet them from access platforms on the river above. I used floodgates inside the tunnel underneath to turn access on and off for when I needed to redirect the river.
