More questions.

1. What does a blue down arrow mean on my dorfs?

2. How do I get more details on what my dwarves are thinking/wanting to do/etc.  I know how to get to the screen where it shows their build, general thoughts, etc.  But is there more?

3. I'm thinking about farming outdoors.  I have 30ish dwarves right now and need some more food.  How do I go about getting seeds?

4. Raising livestock?  Is it possible/worthwhile to make a fence (how?) and raise some horses or something?

5. What is a good dwarf manager for a mac?  It's getting hard with 30 dwarves to keep up with what everyone's skills are.

Thanks so much for the help.  Your answers are greatly appreciated.

1) They're thirsty.  You need booze, most likely.

2) That's it.  There is a lot of info on there, though.

3) Forage for food. If you go (d) (p), you can highlight bushes outside to be gathered.  This requires the plant gathering labor, which must be enabled.  After your dwarves eat the plants from above, you will have seeds.  Alternatively, trade for seeds.  Elves sometimes bring some.

4) There is no fence as such.  But you can build a walled area.  However, livestock are happy to just wander around your fortress and reproduce.  You will be swimming with animals in no time.  In this version butching produces a lot of food.

Great, that helps a lot, thanks so much.

Is there a way to see the skills each dwarf has other than selecting them with the (v) key?  Basically, is there a way to see who is good at what or what each dwarf knows?  I'm assuming this is something for a dwarf manager program.  :-\

Yes, you will want dwarf therapist for that. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=39229.0

Once you accumulate more than two dozen dwarves, you'll go mad trying to assign them all labors.  Once that happens, I recommend downloading Dwarf Therapist, the most full-featured of the labor assignment tools.  It shows moods, skill levels, and currently assigned skills, and lets you make up occupation templates, like one of my favorites:

MEATSMITH
  • Butchering
  • Tanning
  • Lye-making
  • Soap-making
  • Animal Training
  • Animal Care
  • Fish Dissection
  • Fish Cleaning(?)

...two of these guys let me build a "MEAT" burrow which takes in animals and produces useful products.

You make it sound like dwarf heaven.

*The difference between dwarf heaven and human heaven is that human heaven is a bunch of clouds and sissies, and dwarf heaven is underground and everything is made of adamantine and magma.

If I download this thing to make the game awesome-er, does it incorporate itself into all my saves, or would I have to start a new fort?

You run it while you run DF. So it'll work with forts you made before you started using it.

So... how do I run it? Since I use a Mac, and need Terminal for DF, I assume it's similar to Therapist?

1. As mentioned, they are thirsty and probably want booze.  Make sure that your cooking screen has booze forbidden for cooking or your chef can quickly cook your booze supply out of existence.  'z-Kitchen', and un-select booze for cooking.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

How do I find how long my fortress has been going?
