Wizard 101 - Wow/Magic the gathering crossbreed MMORPG
« on: July 14, 2010, 10:00:08 pm »

So I just started playing Wizard 101. It's kind of like a cross between WoW and Magic the Gathering. MMORPG elements with Magic-style combat. Free to download with optional buy-in areas.

Anyone want to try it out with me?

My character is Jessica Storm.

Which part of this is like WoW, besides the MMO part? My roommate plays this with his little brother all the time, and I have never seen any similarities with World of Warcraft, heh.

Maybe you meant Harry Potter?

The quest structure is the same, down to identical yellow !'s and ?'s over quest givers...pets, mounts and acheivements look the same, the starter town is reminiscent of Stormwind. It's simpler, sure. And combat is a rip-off of the Magic cardgame, but there are definitely some similarities.

Apparently the chat/friends system doesn't allow name searches.

To add me, click on the icon in the extreme upper right of your screen, click the "0101" button and enter this code into the box: USSTYMA

Played it together with my GF for a little, its fun but unless you pay for the game you'll run out of things to do.

Plus the area downloading system just sucks.

The fights are fun though.

Doesn't this game feature a limited chat system? I cannot remember if this was the one that did.

It does if you claim to be < 13 years old when you register.

This was my impression of it.  I think Ill pass.  Has potential, but the free areas seem too limited to amuse for more than a couple hours.

I don't know if I just chose a strange spell school, but for me there was a horrible grind from about level 5-7 where the only quests I had available required me to win a 50/50 chance two or three times in a row, and I couldn't upgrade or train any of my spells because the only trainer was in a totally different city that required me to finish the quest chain.

But after I made it past that suddenly a bunch of things opened up, a couple new areas, a bunch of quests, a PvP arena, pets, a pet arena, and some minigames that kind of remind me of Neopets.

MY impression is that this is a game for fairly casual gamers. And kids.

But it's cute. I'll probably keep at it for a bit yet to see what else opens up.

What is the difference between Paying and not paying?

ALSO DANG if I knew it actually had chat I would have joined up a long time ago.

Unfortunately, I'm finding the difference to be whether the game is playable or not. After about level 5 it seems like fully half the available questing areas require paid accounts. Soon afterwards it gets to the point where unpaid accounts are stuck with only a couple quests to choose from at any given moment. Also, apparently the PvP system and arena ranks and awards are pretty much exclusive to paid accounts.

I want to like the game...but unfortunately it seems like Rilder says, you kind of need to pay to get much out of it.

Cute for a couple hours. After that there's just too much that requires a paid account.

I played it and what I find is that anything below 80% seems to have a oddly low chance of success while anything above is almost guarenteed.

Though I am sure it is just my usual weird luck (I've lost battles because of non-stop fizzles...)

Yeah, the fizzle rates seem a little odd to me too. I've occassionally seen that storm snake spell fail 3-4 times in a row. I like it because it's one of the few one-shot-kill spells I have, but it fails way too often. And every now and then there will be a strange battle where 50% of every spell cast by everybody fizzles for minutes at a time.

I realize random is random...but I agree it does seem to happen more often than it should.

Jessica is level 9 right now. Let me know when you catch up a bit and we can tackle some of the absurdly hard quests I have that are the only quests I can do to progress.
