Proxima II. Once a small, barren, largely unimportant world whose only redeeming factor was its proximity to Alpha Centauri. Until, that is, a successful and many-branched company situated in the nearby Alpha Centauri system, known as Rinwell and Company Inc., decided to embark on an incredibly ambitious hundred-year terraforming effort, attempting to transform this barren world into a paradise vacation world situated safely in the heart of the Imperium. When this project was completed, it quickly gained notoriety for being one of the safest tourist venues in the entirety of the Imperium, which is quite a title to hold in a galaxy as hostile and war-torn as the Imperium's. For almost a century Proxima II held this title with pride, making billions in tourist dollars and rocketing the Rinwell company into a new, burgeoning megacorp. Until recently.
Across the planet, mysterious reports of sudden outbursts of murderous rage from perfectly sane individuals, sudden, peculiar and often dangerous mutation of local flora, and several sightings of large, hunched, humanoid beings on a large, remote island on the planet's southern hemisphere began to erupt with increasing regularity. Most troubling of these reports, however, was the sudden and complete loss of communication with a remote luxury resort on the far side of Proxima II's moon. These reports were, perhaps unsurprisingly, immediately met with a massive cover up operation from the Rinwell company, who spent millions to keep witnesses and press quiet. It was not until communications with the planet began to become jammed and garbled, along with a leaked story of sightings of strange, leaping alien beings that the nearby Alpha Centauri militia commander, John Taurus, decided to investigate.
Upon arrival in the system, he was immediately set upon by hordes of executives offering billions in bribes for him to leave the system with shining reports, all of which he rejected. It took only a single scanner sweep for his fleet to detect a massive tendril-like stream of debris millions of miles long falling onto the planet. While investigating this, however, his fleet suddenly sent a single garbled distress signal, then communications were lost.
It was then that the Imperium realized that something was amiss on Proxima II, and its close proximity to the very heart of the Imperium, the Sol system, ensured an entire fleet of Strike-Cruisers bearing a full legion of Space Marines from various chapters was dispatched almost imediately to investigate, with several more legions of Imperial troopers preparing to launch.
