I also use external programs that give graphics.

When i first started out DF, I skipped the vanilla and went straight to using Mayday's, only because I thought the ASCII graphics were too hard to understand. I enjoyed looking at other forts at the DF map Archive, but I couldn't quite understand most of them because they weren't using a graphical tileset. I had only had my feet a bit wet, and still had alot to learn about DF, so I decided against using graphics and to learn the game played the way it was meant to be. After getting accustomed to it, I grew to love it.

Currently, the fort I'm playing, I'm using IronHand's tileset, mostly to mix it up and see the utilization of his Tilemagic. Though, it is pretty, I'd rather use the ASCII because it's so much cleaner.

I love this tileset. It's so... neat.

No graphical sets, here. Just (IBM) code page 437 (square)...

Right here. Whenever I look at a tile set, it takes me a moment to figure out what the hell I'm looking at.

Exactly. I can't even look at tileset screens

A few users once said it looked like a strawberry. :\

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

The default font turned into square. I am considering getting a different font, but definitely not a graphics set.

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

I don't use tilesets since I've started to play many years ago, but I plan to use one in the future, since it will be possible to create proper tilesets, after Toady separates txt/gfx.  [-> so it will be possible to create a gfx tile for everything in the game.] The current tilesets are not good enough because of the engine limititions.

I can understand how people who have gotten used to the ASCII might find tilesets a bit difficult to read, but the notion that they are inherently harder is ridiculous. Barrel is a barrel, fish is a fish. There's no need to learn what each symbol means, so obviously they are simpler. That's the whole point of making graphic packs - if they were harder to read, no one would use them.

Also, what does this "more cluttered" refer to? To my knowledge each tile and the objects on it are displayed exactly the same way whether you use graphics or not, only the symbols are different.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

Have you seen the old dev. page?

You can, of course, simply divert the river through your dining hall, if you want to take the easy way out.
