Axedwarf vs Pickdwarf
« on: July 14, 2010, 09:05:05 am »

So lets say we have two dwarves.
One dwarf has legendary mining, while the other has legendary woodcutting.
None of them have received any military training.

Now lets say we give them each a copper pick and a copper axe to their respective owners and have them duke it out on each other.
Who would win the fight?

The ability to kill a tree or the ability to kill a rock tile?

The miner would win, seeing as mining counts as a fighting skill. He'd drive the pick into the woodcutter's head.

Yeah, Mining is more or less a military skill.  It'd take a lucky shot for the woodcutter to win.

Quick arena tests of mine ended up with the ones with axes winning the majority of the time, just a shame you can add civilian skills to dwarves in the arena mode, it had to be peasants with the weapons there

Really, why don't woodcutters use the axedwarf skill? Is chopping limbs and skulls so much different from chopping wood?

Or, respectively, isn't whacking rocks with a pick rather different from trying to pick someone to death?

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Because trees and rocks don't fight back.  Hacking up a log is alot different than hacking up something trying to hack you back.  Against a tree, you're trying to strike the same area until whats left snaps under the weight... Against an armed opponent, you're trying to hack at whatever area is vulnerable without getting killed yourself.

Realistically? The woodcutter would win.  A pickaxe is too heavy to wield effectively. While an axe is not the ideal weapon, its still a very workable one and one that was readily on hand for most people.

In DF, where the striking power is measured fairly accurately, but not how hard something that heavy would be to wield? The miners got it.

I did some arena testing here and found that picks are superior to axes against armored targets at least. The key might be to use heavy materials like copper or silver for your mining pick.

A pick has a lower base damage, so the axe of course has the advantage.

But a pick has piercing. A pick can go into someone's skull by the time the woodcutter swings his axe.
