What's your fortress music?
« on: July 14, 2010, 05:51:40 am »

What do you listen to whilst carving out your mountainhome? Personally, I listen to the soundtrack from the first LotR film, and some Two Steps From Hell, all very loud and cinematic sounding and quite dwarvenly. Songs from bands like Heidevolk and Turisas are good too, as the viking themes in their songs also remind me a lot of dwarves, considering their similarities.

What do you listen to?

I watch TV, especially when my fortress is starting to drop to a snail pace. In fact I watched LotR while playing, paying special attention to the Moria section :D

I indulge myself in nostalgia and listen to the Unreal soundtrack (the original one, not that tournament bullshit)

When it comes to music, I listen to way too many artists to name, this being a rather long-winded game. I mean, I'd get pretty bored listening to one artist, not to mention one album, for like 8 or 12 hours straight, which is how long I can spend on DF at a time if I really get going.

One particular thing I can recommend when playing slow games like city builders, 4X or grand strategy, is audiobooks. These are games where you rarely have to think on your feet, or otherwise concentrate much, which should usually leave you with enough attention to spare for something like an audiobook, or as Bill said, TV.

Radio comedy, but I always listen to that. Occasionally I let Dwarves share my comedy time.

I often listen to this or the Dungeon Siege Main Theme. I really hated the goblins in Dungeon Siege. Damn bastards are stealing dwarven technology and saying they made it all. But they can't fool a dwarf clad in a thick layer of battle armor, oh no.

For cavern exploration, this music works. Especially the last one seems appropiate when you can touch the cyan fun already.

At least that's what I prefer.

Holy schist, this thread is mica me sick.
DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

I'm actually fond of the in-game music.

but when I'm sick of it anything instrumental will do really.

I have a huge collection of music, sadly mostly on vinyl to which I am not at the moment able to listen, but a fair variety on CDs also.  It is both vocal and instrumental, and none of it is less than ten years old.  Some is much older.  I listen to music sometimes in the late afternoon or evening.  Otherwise I just enjoy the sound of the birds in the backyard, interspersed with the occasional yowls from my cats.  I also read books when the fortress is moving very slowly, or in extreme cases browse the Internet looking for obscure information.  This latter sometimes costs me a couple of hours of fortress building time if I've forgotten I was supposed to be supplying a moody Dwarf and have to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL replay.

Edit:  The thing that cracked me up about the Goblins in Dungeon Seige, which by the way my husband still plays, was that the one that comes up on a pedestal from under the floor looks to me like Bill Gates.   :D

Depends on what kind of Fortress I make. If I make a desert Fortress, it's usually the soundtrack of the Wild Arms games. Especially this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBtkd-3S7-0

I agree about it being awesome, but how long can you listen to the same five-minute (give or take) song?
