Eye strain and DF
« on: July 13, 2010, 02:37:19 pm »

Greetings, oh honored fellow toadies!

I'm currently in the process of dealing with a migraine triggered at seeing an unpaused DF window (I think). I've had headaches from DF before, and it seems likely that it's a result of eye strain; and this makes me Very Very Sad, as I love my fortress of 16 in-game years.

Do ya'll have similar experiences of eye strain / health problems caused by too much DF, and do you have any suggestions on how to lower the eye strain involved?

Thanks!

Sweet Tea

Sit farther from your screen; turn the colors "warmer"; acquire some ADD and a little Schizophrenia so you spend more time looking paranoid-ly around the room instead of at the screen.

Or become a cyborg so you don't have to worry about all these crappy human-related issues.

Changing the colour scheme would be your best bet. There's a good one at the wiki: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Color_schemes

Scroll down and find the one you like ;)

Try gouging your eyes out. Then get someone to read the letters too you.

But then the spoons get covered blood, and the red doesn't go well with the color of the table cloth.

On the other hand it goes well with the Flowers!

Exercise your eyes, every hour you should focus on an object about 20 feet away from you for at least 20 seconds. I give it a minute or more. This keeps your eyes from getting too used to looking at things close-up and may help you...

Put the screen on the far end of the table, lean back in your chair and tie yourself down if you unintentionally go forward. Just stay far away from the details, keep looking at the big picture!

And if you can't read things anymore, just guess what they might mean!

Dwarf Fortress should have a mode were it just reads the letters to you.
"A green club, a green capital e, that symbol for and, a smiley face." It would be done in the voice of old snake.

"The dwarven fortress of Boatmurdered", the novel. In seven trillion books, ten thousand pages per book.

That would be the best audio book, and if old snake was the voice, you could call it a Hideo Book.

Ah, I appear to have found another piece of my problem:

I've been sleeping in the mornings, i.e. 4:30-11 (the sun comes up at 5 and it gets light at 4;30 here now)
I don't sleep with my eyes closed.
I work on the computer at night almost exclusively.
My computer has a backlight.

Hey look, my eyes have a light shining in the 24/7. Sad times. Now time to get back to normal sleep. Gnight!
