I thought this game was immensely fun and well-executed.  Due to warnings of pernicious rebels I got an unofficial patched file.  Apparently, the whole million-plus-one rebels thing comes from a missing bracket somewhere in the Boxer Rebels resource, and it screws with the calculations.

Properly balanced, rebellions work as I expect they should; they represent dissatisfaction with the prevailing government and only appear when you allow the militancy of your population to get out of control.  They're easily put down by your military unless your military is comprised of rebel sympathizers.  They tend to turn on you and cause trouble.

Thing is, even if you get a rebellion that manages to conquer your entire country, you don't lose.  After a year goes by with an occupied capital, the rebellion takes power and your government switches to meet their demands.  This is a great way to rid your country of that pesky Prussian Constitutionalism without having to pass difficult reforms.

Is this game a system hog?

My increasingly dated PC might just be able to handle it...if I give it a digital enema first, and then double the RAM.  Really want to get my hands on this one, though.

My laptop from 2006 or 7 runs the game just fine so long as I stay zoomed out enough that the nicer looking map with country names and such is there instead of that atrocious animated 3d thing I see zoomed in.

System requirements:

  • Windows XP/Vista/7.0
  • Intel® Pentium® IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+
  • 2GB RAM
  • 2 GB hard disk space,
  • NVIDIA® GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon® X1900 video card

The game will only recognize 2GB of RAM and is only single-threaded. The biggest bottle neck will be your CPU.

I´m not sure what single-threaded means, but I´m working with a Pentium IV 2.8ghz around six years old, thereabouts.  I don´t feel that it´s the beast it used to be, like it needs a good oiling up or something.  I´ve been debating whether to sink a hundred quid into a tune-up or just assemble a new rig entirely.  Is there even such thing as a CPU tune-up or is it a waste of time/money?

Nah, a tune-up would be a good thing to do. The game cannot use more than one CPU core, and the POP calculations in the late game are the main hog. So it's the raw speed that matters.

A multi core computer will help as Victoria 2 will use one core whilst everything else is tasked to the other cores. 3-4 GB RAM will do fine running this game. ATM there's a late game memory leak which boosts memory usage to 1.5GB from 1.00GB. Hopefully its fixed in 1.2. The game won't really get any faster, this engines pretty much fully optimised.

Okay first time playing, decided to try out Japan because I wanted to see what it was like being uncivilized for some reason, so far its been pretty fun, I got (In my eyes) really lucky early on and got an event that gave me a gold mine in Kobe, basically fixing economic problems for awhile, a while later I got freedom of trade which turned me into an economic powerhouse apparently, even without factories. I then invaded Korea, which was easy since I was simply better then them. Now working my way to 30 prestige so I can modernize and debating invading china because they won't ally with me, unfortunately attacking anything would fuck up my infamy which is already pretty terrible.

Edit: went and ended Korea's independence, which catapulted me up to 30 Prestige which allowed me to go civilized, this was enough to make me a great power.

Ah well, if you read my edit I'm civilized now...

Also FUCK YEAH, after a long and grueling influence war I managed to get China into my influence, previously China was going to war with me at the slightest provocation. Now we are bestest friends and the slaughterfields of the Korea-China border are now safe.

Unfortunatly on the home front Japan seems to be infested with Anarcho Rebels.

The other day I did a game as Egypt. The good thing about Egypt is that it's one of those uncivilized nations that start out with absurd military score, and so I was able westernize rather easily through annexation of Ethiopia+humiliation of most Arabian countries for the prestige.
I was on my way colonizing Africa as quickly as I could and my research was on par with european countries as prior to westernization all my NFs were promoting clergymen. It wasn't long before I was the #1 producer of cotton and directing it all into my textile industry, also being #1 in textile production and having built the Suez Canal myself. I ate up most of Arabia, but France got a hold in northern Nejd and later went for annexation. Obviously I betrayed my ally and annexed him before France could, and then went on to push France out of Arabia, though the region had some 100k french living in it by the time I did that. It was around this time that I brought the Ottomans into my sphere and fought a couple wars with russia that usually ended in me just letting them have a region after killing a shitload of their soldiers. After a few wars with France in North Africa which didn't go particularly well and the aforementioned wars with russia I got crippled by stubborn Great Powers asking for rights to steal my artifacts from the valley of kings daily. After trying to mod the decision/event chain to make it so that they only needed to be denied once I got bored with it. After all I had most of africa east of Sokoto, with a near endless supply of money enough to have top tier railroads and a profitable factory in every region.
I also had Indochina as a colony and was the most politically liberal country since around the time I became a great power (HM's Government, Secret Ballots, free press, free trade unions, universal voting+women's suffrage, and proportional voting system, all while still having legal slavery)

Nah, only got 10 infamy from each annexation, never let my infamy go over 20.

Until the next patch (1.02 I think), I recommend you use the tweak Ampersand posted for militancy, or one of the other solutions for rebel spawns, unless you're a thorough masochist.
