Image two shows most of Africa. There is a generic westernisation decision for all countries, and Japan has a unique with lower requirements. These countries will likely never westernise without the assistance of the player, except Japan.

I'm somewhat looking forward to this, but I won't be buying it for a while.

It is always best to be wary of Paradox games at release. One of the devs said the game was over-hyped.

iirc hearts of iron 3 was a disaster on release. Everything the would slow down on most modern-ish machines, and even crash at some point. Then there was that Prussia game, which was awesome, but included music tracks that were obviously ripped from some CD. They even had the clapping at the end in there, it's obvious the devs never played the tracks all way from start to finish.

They admitted that they aimed too high with Hearts of Iron 3. It doesn't run on my computer because of its poor specs (I can get E:TW, just as long as I don't do battles), but AFAIK the speed has been improved a lot. Rise of Prussia, which I presume is 'that Prussia game' I don't know much about.

You don't. The game developer has stated that he will not model many African nations out of a belief that those nations aren't really that important.

This is wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

They don't model African nations because it makes the game more fun and streamlined.  If the African continent was modeled as a bunch of tiny nations, it would be a pain in the ass as a colonizing power and there'd be nothing but artificial limitations to stop you from systematically conquering those african nations one by one in the 1840s.

Nope, they just have to "civilize". After they do that, they have a shot. At least, I'm hoping they do. It'd be a shame if they didn't. I will install any sort of mod that betters the situation in Africa, though. At least it lets you play as more countries than in most strategy games, if that counts for anything.

Only Japan can westernize, as previously stated. Other countries are SOL.

All countries can Westernize, but Japan have a much easier time to westernize due to the Meji Restoration.

Oh, come on Paradox. You saw a AAR where a one-territory pagan nation with a built-in tech penalty conqured the whole damn Earth in a single EU3 game. If they really are having the game record every single person on Earth, the same should happen to the minor nations.

What's next, CK2 where you can only play as Germany and Byzantium? Sigh...

EDIT: I just read about the Cthulhu Rising event chain. What the fuck. This game is supposed to be realistic. Lovecraft was alive during Victoria's timeframe. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it is fully out of place.

It would be no problem if there was a Cthulhu Rising event chain, there was an alien event in doomsday that happened if all major powers were eliminated, and it happened naturally just about never.

Wait, the alien invasion was real? I thought for sure that was a mod of some type. Huh. I guess there's also the Dragons from Crusader Kings, but those rumors have the potential to just be rumors.

I downloaded the demo but it gave me an error when loading the game, and I don't feel like fixing it tonight. I may try tomorrow.

Well, the demo is pretty awesome. I have no idea why Mexico is strong enough to resist both the USA and Texas. US should be able to beat Mexico pretty easily, as Santa Anna wasn't exactly the smartest or greatest general.


I dunno. It's a great economic game. I love the independence of building that capitalist nations have, and how dictatorships and communist governments set up their own. However, the combat always seems to be somewhat lacking. If you were going to buy it for epic wars, it might not be the best idea and better to spend your money on the gold edition of Rome: Total War.
