Crazy idea questions
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:42:08 pm »

So, I had a crazy idea a couple hours ago. What if someone (I probably don't have the skill or knowledge involved, but I'd be willing to give it a shot...) made a mod where the dorfs had to research materials and technology based on a tree (ala Civilization).

Would it be possible to:
A) Restrict materials/items until researched
B) Make a workshop (like a laboratory) that uses up un-researched material to generate "points" toward unlocking said material (e.g. if you find/buy horn/native silver, you can unlock silver on the tree, but if you don't have it to experiment on, you can't unlock it.)
C) Make a workshop (like a drafter's station) to make blueprints for new technologies (such as more effective weapons or armor or siege weapons or whatever) that generates "points" toward unlocking those items?
D) This one is sort of unrelated, but still a neat idea: Make a workshop (or mod the jeweler) to make jewelry from 1 precious metal and 1 cut gem?

Like I said earlier, I know it's a crazy idea, but I think it would be fun to push your dorfs to evolve over time.

A person was talking about doing something like this a while ago. Which was actually pretty cool. He was talking about needing a tome/book/novel/scrip/whatever that you would use a reagent (that doesn't get used up) to work on certain things. For example you would start writing the books pages (1-1000) via reaction and then you combine all the pages into the novel via a reaction and then you can say for example make steel plate armor. However, you HAVE to have the book in order to do so.

I hope that makes sense. Yes you can do it, yes it will be complicated, yes it will be very time consuming.

That should answer your A-C questions hopefully. I'll go more in depth if you need it.

As for D I believe you can. You'll most likely want/need to make a new workshop. You'll need to give all precious metals the "precious metal" reaction class or w/e and then you could do it that way. I haven't touched the reaction class stuff yet.

A. There's a few roundabout ways of doing the first one, but I don't think there's really a hard-set way to prevent your dwarves from just rushing up the tech tree in the first season. I've been tossing around the idea a bit too, and I'm thinking that a very expensive plant that takes a LONG time to grow can be used as a reagent, or that it's a material that must be introduced externally, either through trading or by sieges, take a look at Psieye's thread for a bit more info on that.

B. I'm sort of confused on what you mean.

C. Again, roundabout ways of doing it. Make your reactions generate another item that can be used as points to make a new metal/item, and make it so you can't actually mine ores for that metal. I've tried something similar, and it seems a lot more clunky than I'd like it to be.

D. If you make a custom item called jewelry, it should work. But then again, I've never really messed with wearable jewelry.

EDIT: Making books work too. Can't believe that slipped my mind, seems like one of the more straight-forward methods.

B. I'm sort of confused on what you mean.

Example: You mine, and find something like galena. Your dorfs take the galena to the lab, use up a few of the pieces of ore (making "Research Points" or something like that out of them,) and then are able to smelt and use lead.

Make sense?

With the book thing though you would require certain resources. Also you could have certain tier books.

For example

Stone books...
You don't want a stone book... however it would be a book that would allow basic stuff, like leather armor and wooden crossbows and other light stuff.

Leather books...
Could be a step up and allow your low metal work (not iron or steel), could allow for getting seeds from special plants.

Cloth books would be towards the ending equipment where you could get steel equipment.

Encrusted special books (requiring very hard to find gems, possibly adamantine.)

That would be pretty cool. I'll have to monkey around with this sometime when I'm a little more confident in my modding skills (or alcohol powered.)

I could make a stone tablet for each of the simplest things. Is there any way to require an obscene amount of time per book (like a season for simple things or a year or more for more advanced things?) Is there any way that something like student could be changed to researcher and used to reduce the time needed?

Just make it have more pages.

Hauling will take a ton of time.

So, say, smelting iron and making iron items would have a book of about 25 pages or so, and making electrum would take somewhere around 250? (Electrum is modded into my semi-vanilla game as currency, and I'm trying to figure out how to make all sorts of materials into weapons.)

This is an interesting concept. One I'll have to really sit down and think about.

Okay, dumb question time:

I've figured out how to make weapons and armor and whatnot out of all sorts of metals. How do I add metals into the game? Is that even possible? On top of that, is there a way to add more ores? (Yes, I know that sounds crazy.)

In particular, I'd like to add Wolfram (Tungsten) and Black Wolfram (Tungsten Carbide), as well as possibly Cobalt and Porcelain (nifty figurines and super sharp blades!)

Is it just as easy as copying one, pasting, editing and saving, though?  I mean...I know that I'll have to add a reaction to Wolfram to get it to behave properly, but that seems easy enough too...

Is it really that easy, or am I missing something?

An issue with this mod is that you can't alter the normal workshops, and producing gear via reaction makes it no-quality and in the case of armour, unwearable.

So, I wouldn't be able to mod the smelter to smelt Black Wolfram. That sucks. I guess I'll have to make a smelter2 or specialty smelter or something. I have no idea what you're talking about as far as producing gear via reaction, though. All I did was add the item tags to the materials in question. Haven't even played with adding anything into the raws yet, though. Getting a new job and doing training, as well as looking for a house, kinda got in the way.

@Lofn, I gave up on pointing that out. :P However...

You could set it so it's for smelting the metal. That would restrict you to certain metal usage which would restrict certain armors.

@MaximumZero, it really depends how indepth you want to get...

You can simply take steel for example, copy/paste and change the name and you have a new metal, play with the metal numbers until you're happy with what you've got and better understand what does what.

You could then add a new mineral (copy/paste/change names) and have it get smelted into your metal.

You would have to make a reaction to smelt your mineral into a metal. That's how it is for all metals iirc.

And about the pages... more or less. You could continue to play with the numbers of pages until you were satisfied with how long it takes.
