The only time I let my dwarves in the caverns is when I walled off the caverns entirely, since it allows you to place walls at the very edge of the map. It was a pain on the last wall though, at the very top of the wall creatures spawned in the masses.

If you do upload the save, that would be awesome. A large and nice fortress that has good FPS? Who can turn that down? I don't want to start a new fortress if my designs lead to me abandoning because of FPS. I can fight off all else with ease, except the Lagmonster..... :'(

This fortress is awesome. It competes with Duke's castle (can't recall the name, I believe it was something-abbey).

Note that I do currently play with invaders and temperature turned off. Invaders turned off to reduce hauling annoyances with goblins, and temperature because its a needless FPS hit.

Also one thing I like to do is mix up the squads. So every 5 years or so I disband all squads and remake them. This way it mixes up the dwarves and cycles through the equipment such that everything can be properly blinged out.

Bah! never wall off the caverns completely you'll lose so much potential fun by doing that. Funnel the few openings so you can decide what to do with the critters that appear.

I don't wall them off entirely, I leave space for FUN to spawn at the edge of the map. But I do build walls that funnels them into gated entrances.

Also I think I may just abandon my idea of moving the fortress down lower. It'll be a mess. The caverns will just be too cramped. Instead, I'll build a surface city! All sorts of buildings built with rock blocks, streets and alleyways.

And then leave it completely uninhabited. That will be my goblin war zone.  :D

in the center build a hollow statue of your greatest warrior, make a tunnel to the top, at the top lock them in then ambush them
