Another thing I should note: Legendary Lands bodies are constructed properly, versus the hideous monstrosities that are the default.
That is, everything connects properly. Heads connect to necks, that connect to bodies.
In vanilla, necks connect to heads that connect to bodies. throats also connect to heads, rather than necks.

Does this mean that things like fingers and toes will be properly covered by gauntlets and boots now?

Actually that was Toady's bad.
I believe he's fixed that but I can't be sure. However, that's nothing to do with any RAWS I've messed with so far.

Here are the body raws.
I've included the legacy stuff, so I think it should work just by replacing body_default with it if you want to try it out. No promises though.
If you do find errors, let me know, and I'll correct it.
Due to the limitations of the forum, I actually need to paste this into three separate messages.
Wait, so just making sure, I could just replace the current body_default with this, and it'll fix the neck/head issue? I don't need anything else yet?

Admittedly, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, especially when it comes to defining materials for tissues and such, but I am still very interested in just how clean it all is. I don't mind my messy raws, but this definitely seems to be much simpler when it comes to making minor variations of a creature.

Ehhhh, it's a little more complex than that I'm afraid.
Most stuff in DF uses the normal humanoid, humanoid_simple, and so on body templates.
I could easily modify the templates in order to give the appropriate creatures necks in the right places, but the problem is that they have NECK listed in their body parts as well. So you will probably get a critter with two necks at best - one joining the head and body, and one hanging limply from the head.
I'm not sure what the effect of having the necks always connect head and body would be, without putting the body input in order.
By this I mean changing the head connection to reference the neck, which is added later, and changing the neck to connect to the body.
At best, it would work fine. At worst, it would separate the head from the body, causing it to hover around the critter in an only very vaguely attached way.

Anybody who wants to give it a shot to find out is welcome.
the appropriate changes would be to the HUMANOID template, changing the head from [CONTYPE:UPPERBODY] to [CON:NECK], and the neck from [CONTYPE:HEAD] to [CONTYPE:UPPERBODY].
Give it a go in Arena, and let me know the results.

The results are you have no head and suffocate. If you use CONTYPE:NECK and try again, you have a head but you still suffocate

I also got quite a few errors as well. Seems like it can't place the facial features on correctly either.

As I suspected.
Bodies need to be built in an ordered way, like drawing a tree from the trunk out to the smallest branches.
Basically, if you draw those branches  first, they just sort of sit there in the air, even if you then draw the trunk for it to attach to.

Edit: Essentially this means to correct the problem in vanilla would require me to go through every creature anyway. I'm sure you'll understand my reluctance to do that.

Oh. That makes sense. I can't imagine it being too fun to fix up all the vanilla monsters either.

I'll still keep my eye on this though, it's really interesting to see things tackled from a different angle.

Mind if I use your work in my work too? ^^. Looks pretty cool, and having things properly constructed would be preferable.

Using my stuff here is just fine.
However, please bear in mind that its all WIP. The raws posted are no longer the same.
Some bugs have been squashed, and other things have been added.

Things in particular modified:
I forgot to actually put scales on fish. Oops.
Added more quick attacks.
Added some more quick tissues.
Removed feathers from parts of birds not traditionally feathered
Gave fairies and pixies actual wings of lace.
