Turn 4: Let There Be LightStand in the direct center of the top of the gate and exact vengeance on the demons that climb up.
The demons hurl themselves on the gate, but at seeing a target above, some try to climb up, ramming their claws into the wood for purchase. [4] They succeed in advancing within sword range. [1+2] vs [4-2]. You clip a demon's face, but it keeps coming.
I go where the commander told me to and pick up some stones.
If demons are at melee distance, I grab one of them and cast Shrapnel Shatter.
If not, I throw Fireballs at them.
Stones [3] You gather up a few small rocks, but there's nothing large enough for a truly impressive Shrapnel Shatter. As it happens, a few demons are trying to make it up the gate. [1+1][Luck 2] Trying to combine several stones for a bigger effect, the magic doesn't take well, causing them to burst harmlessly into sand. You don't even think you got any in any demons' eyes.

[6] Fascinating, the demons seem to possess that odd combination of living being and automaton sometimes seen in undead. You're just suspecting to yourself that these forms might be shambling shells rather than their "true" bodies, almost like zombies, when one tries to grab your face. [1] vs [2]. You barely manage to pull back as the demon loses its grip. Uh, maybe you shouldn't have leaned in that close to study them.
I stay in the tower and summon pathetic little animals
[5+1][Luck 1]. You summon a rather large boar, who promptly lashes out at you in fury. [5] vs [5+1]. You slam yourself into the wall avoiding its expert charge, but you're okay.
+1 SummoningI make my way to where the Commander told us to go. As the demons advance, I'll try to create stone spikes in the ground before the fortress to point at them like lances, to hinder their attacks.
[2+1][Luck 3]. You create several spike-ish protrusions, but they're pretty small and the demons mainly ignore them.
+2 Earth MagicIce some demons
[3][Luck 5] You sort of create some ice on a demon's face. Fortunately this blinds it, causing it to smash into the wall and disrupt its neighbors.
+2 Water MagicGo up to the walls, and try to create a bright light shining from the wall underneath where we're staning, to throw off any enemy archer/spitter's aim.
[6][Luck 6] You bathe the entire lower walls in blinding light. Nobody on the wall can really see the demons, but at least the demons presumably can't see anything.
+5 Light MagicUh, fire!
[3] The archers fire at the mass of blinding light, doing some damage.
Kill!
[3-1] The demons attempt to flail at the walls and gates, but can't see well enough to do any damage.
Fire!
The archers in the courtyard fire a volley high into the air. [1] A few land near the magi on the walls, but most scatter uselessly behind the demons.
