and then, i've made my vote FOR a suggested feature, but i would also like to have a vote AGAINST one, namely excavate. It seems to me that mining or digging is essentially removing material from the ground. Not having that part of the task is wishing to make stone simply evaporate by sheer terror of a copper pick.

Good Point. I second that.

hehehehe According to future of the fortress Toady has started work on, among other things, underground diversity. Hell yeah.

more raw file access

specifically, give us more then 256 spaces for character sets (it already is for graphic sets, why not character sets?) that would allow complete skins for the game, which would definitely open up the accessibility of it (more important than better menus I think)

That gets my vote, the fans will whip up some nice art in not time and then one or more such terrain graphic sets SHOULD BE INCLUDED WITH THE GAME as a replacement for the ASCII terrain (which could remain an option for those who are fans of it, it would simply be implemented through the new system).  The terrain and objects dropped on it would have their own bmp files seperate from the character sets eliminating the issue of garbling text in order to make the terrain more attractive.

I'd really, REALLY love to be able to play this game on my laptop when I'm not at the house. A whopping 20 fps average just isn't playable, and that's after some tweaking.

Framerate optimization would be the the one thing I would ever ask for. Make this playable on a shitty Dell laptop and I will donate countless amounts of dollars.

Amazing to think that Toady actually codes the game on a laptop! I always assumed he had some kind of decommissioned Cray supercomputer.

I use a laptop and I haven't had any problems playing df, you just need a decent laptop.  One thing you could do is see if your laptop can have memory added to it.  Extra ram goes a long way because of how much df has to keep track of.

I use a 3.5 year old Dell Latitude D600, had problems a few months ago where I couldn't get above 13 FPS, but the problem went away as mysteriously as it showed up.

Once I flooded the countryside attempting to drill through an aquifer.
I neglected to build either a restraining wall or a shutoff switch.
The growing circle of fluids eventually ate my FPS. Although my dwarves were safe on the other side of the hill, I abandoned because of unplayability.

Also make sure that if you are using a laptop it doesn't have the option of turning down processor speed to save the battery on. If it does have this option, and you still want to have a long battery life, a good idea is to always play dwarf fortress with your laptop plugged into the wall if possible.

Always do.  DF kills my 2:30 hour battery in about 45 minutes.

I'm actually glad it doesn't run on my laptop, because if it did, I would be VERY tempted to play at work...

I am really thrilled by both the massive participation here in zagibu's thread, and the response we've gotten from Toady (IE the mass build tool, slated improvements ala Underground Diversity) and have been thinking about ways we could improve the system for the next run.

One little thing I was thinking about is how the concepts/comments around the suggestions are scattered across the threads and the 10 pages of this one. Having single consolidated threads for the topics would make it much more organized and easier for Toady to read through. It would also help to cut down on duplicate/repetitive threads (this has been a huge benefit of this thread).

My suggestion is this:
(If and) when the next "brainstorming" occurs, the initial suggestion could be accompanied by a link to a topic discussion thread where the idea, ramifications, synergies, limitations, etc could be discussed. This would also help with informing potential poll takers of just what is meant by a vague one liner. The poll administrator could then add the link into the initial post for reference.

IE:

Top 10 Round Two ideas:
Nobles should wear pajamas ( URL to pajama thread )
Kittens should ambush butchers (URL to kitten ambush thread)
Stones should spontaneously explode ( URL to exploding stone thread )

The suggestion should only include a link to its own thread if:
  • The suggestion is complex, has many details or options needing discussion (IE stop the No Dwarves Outside entrance dance did NOT need one)
  • You are the original suggester, the idea is common, or the originator has given you permission to run the thread
  • You intend to check on, discuss and update the OP of the new thread as the discussion evolves

As an example, let me offer up my own current thread: (not an advert)
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=22024.0
Notice I have (as of today) modified the original suggestion twice as people have pointed out ways it could be improved.

edit: working one one such thread for Underground Diversity but don't want to post it yet until I have done enough back research to make it useful.
