Top 10 suggestions
« on: June 07, 2008, 09:29:00 am »

In the following threads, the community has voted for it's top 10 suggestions:
http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003042
http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003193
http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003407

The list of suggestions:
  • show lever connections / name levers / blink connected:
One or several improvements to the lever UI, so that it is easier to distinguish what lever does what.
  • excavate - mine without stone production:
Many players have problems with excess stone, and they wish an additional "dig" option that does not leave stones behind.
  • job priorities:
Jobs with higher priorities will be done first (if possible).
  • combine stacks / better stack handling:
Options to split and combine stacks of items of the same type.
  • stop dwarven entrance dance when ordered inside:
Make them check if their destination is outside BEFORE deciding to do the job at all. Then make them not take the job, if it is outside, and they are not allowed to go there.
  • forbidden area designation:
A designation, whose tiles a dwarf will avoid in any circumstances.
  • framerate improvements:
    Make the game run faster.
  • improved sieges:
Make sieges more interesting and difficult by implementing moveable siege engines, siege ladders, sappers, trap disarmers, etc.
  • more underground diversity:
Include more interesting underground surroundings (similar to D&D underdark).
  • more raw files:
Store more game-critical information in raw files to make the game even more editable.

( I have replaced mass building of constructions and (d)esignate dump by the new suggestions at the top (which were fifth and sixth at the last voting), because Toady has confirmed the mbwf and (d)d will be implemented in the next release. The list seems to work... )

Underground diversity, by a whisker.

Hope this also covers non-mountainous biomes... I want something more than just an aquifer under that terrifying swamp.

Gonna have to go for: More Raw Files.  Definately more editing options.

Not to start an arguement, though I'm sure it will- Should "Framerate Improvements" really be in the list?  As it says, it's just a mass a appeal to 'make my game run better'.  It's a goal huge enough that it has it's own development arc, which Toady has given every indication he won't get to until he thinks the program's ready for it.  Framerate problems come from a multitude of programing issues that effect every system differently.  It's not exactly a suggestion, much less a defined one.

Ooh... I'm torn between mass building and underground diversity. I guess I'll go with underground diversity.

Framerate improvement definitely should be on the list, because it's very hard to do interesting stuff when your FPS slows down to 5.. as it inevitably will, as your fortress is getting more complex.

So framerate improvement has my vote.

Since it is mostly the pathfinding that sucks up the clock cycles, my suggestions to improve it are:
- fix the z-axis, so that masons don't need to go to the center of the earth to pick up a piece of granite.
- player-restricted movement: even if we simply can exclude z-levels for specific dwarves, or specific professions, that would be a huge boon: 85% of my dwarves have no business in the depths or the outside and should remain safely at home +/- 2 levels around the main hall. If that doesn't reduce the requirements of the pathfinding, I don't know what will. Burrows are in the dev notes anyway.

So many good choices...

I think I'll have Mass build designation, Trebeck.
Designate dump can wait, is not so bad currently.

Framerate improvement, period.  The game has to be playable.  Too many good fortresses gone the way of unknown FPS killers.

If only we could vote for more than one...

Mass building of constructions, though framerate improvements would be a close second.

Move more stuff to the RAW.  Buildings, for instance.  Do that, and we can have dwarf fortresses be distinct in gameplay from human towns and goblin towers.  Then all that's left would be to make the interface more tied to the RAWs (so you can actually make your humans wield larger weapons).

More raw files.  I like a lot of the others in the list, but beefing up the raws will give the kind of modding freedom I really want.

More raws. It's the gift that keeps on giving - the more cool features are added, the cooler still we can make them ourselves.
