I wanted the hunter!

And just a warning.. I have a magma obsession that every once in awhile may lead to a few dead dwarves ;)

Sorry, got distracted by Final Fantasy XIII for a while, going to continue the fort now.

Oh, the pending requests are on my to-do list.

EDIT: Oh, and btw, if my logs are too image heavy, just tell me. I just like to include images of everything.

The chronicles of Flagpast, written by Kipi

Now that we have iron ore, I ordered some of it to be smelted. The order went to the furnaces to-do list, which already contained smelting of tetrahedrite and making coal. I think we can remove the smelting of tetrahedrite soon, as it's not so important right now compared to the iron and coal.

I just noticed that we are not producing anything for trading. While our stockpiles does hold some mugs for that purpose, there is never too much of things for trading. I could understand this if the workshop is reserved for better use, but currently there is nothing done there. This is something I have to fix. Luckily, due the job reallocation, we have this one guy who has assigned stonecrafting job. It still escapes me WHY he is not producing anything, perhaps Existent didn't see it worthy to keep the craft industry running all the time. But things are different now, and I'm leading this place. So, for now on, the crafting industry is back in business again.

We need to boost the wealth of Flagpast so that more dwarves are willing to move in. And I know one good way to do that. We have jewelry workshop, and we have raw gems. So, we can cut the raw gems and encrust stuff with them. The only thing we need is someone to do that. But, luckily, we have a winner, dwarf called Cappstv. He has nothing better to do and he has the skills for this.
On the side note, it makes me angry to know that we don't have even slightest clue of our current wealth. That is because our broker is so damn inexperienced that he can't tell us the values of stuff in the fortress. I'm tempted to remove him from the broker position and give the position to the only dwarf who is skilled in that. Sadly, the dwarf in question has been assigned to military by Existent, and I don't want to make our military any less powerful than it's now.

The cemetery is finally ready, except that there is no door and we don't have any coffins yet. But hey, the area is cleared at least!
There were good amount of limonite, and the vein is still visible in the walls, probably leading deeper. But I trust we find iron ore later from different place, so I don't see any reason to break the shape of the cemetery.

The beginning of Slate brought some wonderful news. Some migrants had arrived to our fortress! And not just some, but 21 dwarves exactly! This is both blessing and curse, as while twenty one dwarves means a lot working force, it also buts some heavy strains on our food production. And what about the housing problems this brings! But all these can be solved.
One of the arrivals, a hunter, proved her worth immediately. Her name is Shibdib and alone she killed zombie cougar which was going to be a threat to the immigrants. Because of her everybody reached the fortress safely. She and the other hunter coming with the migrants killed two other undead along the way.

I went on and interviewed the arrivals. There were couple of dwarves who got my attention. First of there was this peasant called SolarShado, who even though don't have any skills yet wants to be mechanic. Fine to me as that will remove one burden from my back. Secondly, there was this Ragnarok, who is very, very talented in blacksmithing. She claimed to be High Master as status. That is good, very good. There was also couple woodcutters, so I was able to remove that labor from our carpenters. There was also one mason with skills of engraving as well, so I decided to remove those two tasks from my mining partner. Also, there was one High Master stonecrafter, thus the task was removed from our own crafter.

I ordered the construction of fishery to the food production center, as I have assigned one of the migrants to be fisher and one to be fish cleaner. We need shells which may be gotten from the turtles.

Continuing the log in new post, decided to post this up so that everybody can see what's going on in the Flagpast at the moment. I think I have fulfilled every dworfing request made thus far.

Journal entry crossed over because of losing progress due crash.

Lemme think. I'm pretty sure I turned the crafting off because I needed the man- err, dwarfpower elsewhere. The tetrahedrite was my desperate attempt at silver, in lieu of iron or steel, which was succesful- one of the military mott-heads has a silver hammer, a hell of a lot better than nothing.

Did we even have a broker? It's not a job I ever give a damn about, I usually have it set to "anyone can trade" until much later on.

I like the broker just for the ability to sort by worth.. beyond that he's useless imo

Why would you not have a broker?  The position doesn't cut into any of a dwarf's normal duties, and it's better to give one dwarf all the appraise/negotiate experience than spread it out over random dwarves.

I usually set a manager and record keeper too, since it takes a dwarf very little time to record up to medium precision (which is enough for most items).

Entirely unrelated, but I felt like sharing.

One dwarf, full adamantine armor/axe.

Two Hundred Zombie humans.

Fifty skeletal humans in iron greaves/breastplate, wielding iron shields/shortswords.

One skeletal Troll, wielding a steel warhammer.

There's not a way to place a certain number of creatures at once, is there? If so, I might stage a full on apocalypse- dwarven outpost, maybe 20 stout men against thousands of undead.

I myself like to have broker, so that
A) I can see the wealth
B) I can see the worth of items

For manager, I usually tend up having dedicated manager, perhaps manager/arsenal dwarf, as I use a lot manager menu. Also, dedicated bookkeeper as bookkeeping usually tends to override everything else.

@existent
You know, I'm not criticizing your action, we have different ways of playing this game.  ;)
So no need to explain all your actions my dwarf comments in journal...

Oh no, it's not like that. It's more so you know what's going on. I figure, the more you know about WHY something was being done- IE, "existent, why is this miner in a hole?" "Oh, he's gonna go berserk in like, 10 minutes."- the better you can handle the situation.

A good example is the tetrahedrite thing- you cancelled it to make iron/steel, but having explained it you also knew that one of our military motts had a silver hammer because of it. No hard feelings here or anything. Just explaining for the sake of explaining.

Well, except that one lever. I put that in at like 8am, having not gone to bed yet, and I'm not sure what my logic was there.

The chronicles of Flagpast, written by Kipi

With the immigrants we got very bad housing problem in our hands. So, to tackle that I designed the extension to bedroom floor. I hope that's enough for us and no new immigrant wave in any time soon.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The undeads are getting on my nerves. Again one of those showed up its rotting face, this time zombie groundhog. Our fisher was on his way to fishing spot, when he saw the creature. I sent the squad "The Laborious Climaxes" to kill it, as they are wielding steel axes. It took some time to get the squad moving, as the two soldiers in it, one of them being no-one else than Military Commander Existent, were sleeping. At the end the other fella, wielding spear, decided to go out and kill it. And now the groundhog is back among the dead.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The battle scene somehow reminded me of one thing we are missing: place to store all the bones, skulls and shells used for crafting. Well, we are not exactly missing a storage for those things, but the one we currently have is outside, and that's why those disappear after some time. We need a place inside where to store them. So, I designated room for body parts stockpile.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There is so much to dig that I decided to draft one idle newcomer for mining. So, now we have three of us doing the digging, I hope we get things done faster this way...

And just when we got all three of us mining, my old mining companion decided to get mood. How typical.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He went on and claimed one of our masonries, throwing the guy working there out. Then he went to collect something, probably the raw materials.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not sure if I should call us lucky or not, but the moody guy went and collected three limestone rocks, and then begun working. I'm a kinda curious to see what's the product going to be.

I ordered some furniture to be encrusted with the gems we have produced this far, and I left the encruster to choose which furniture are used.

We need more bins, beds and barrels to be produced as well as more alcohol. I gave the manager the amounts to be done, and he should take care of the details.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well well, the moody fella just came out from the masonry. He had made coffin from those three limestone rocks. Nothing fancy, and we don't even know its worth yet, due the inexperienced broker. Still, I think I will claim this one for my personal use.

Flagpast: so exciting, our engravers make images of cacti.

Edit: Btw, Kipi, if you could upload a couple screenshots of the entire fort when your turn is done, that'd be great.
