This is why I hate the king. Instead of sending a large batch of trained professionals to start a Dwarven outpost, he chooses folk at random, and then lets 'em figure out how to convince some other poor sods to come along with 'im. At least I got some military training- most of the "expeditions" are led by peasants. Hah. We'll see how long THOSE last.

Meanwhile, I' stuck with seven of the greenest dwarf folk I ever met. I guess I shouldn'ta expected the elite castes to give up their lives of lux so easily, but cut me some slack! The poor are the only fella's desperate enough to go and take a risk like this, and what good are they? I'm tellin' ya, the dirt castes are poor for a reason. Not a lick a sense amongst 'em.

Anywho, my whinin' don't matter much, because I'll be branded a traitor if I turn back now- an' Armok knows me and that Hammerdwarf have a history. I fer one don't intend to get myself locked up in one o' dem Dwarven jails ever again. Oh no, not after last time. If that means going on t'a straight an' narrow, so be it. The way I figure it, if I can just keep these buggers alive, I can high-tail it out of here on the first chance I get. No- scratch that, they'll be sendin' a dispatch to check on us in the fall. There's no way in Armok I'm trekkin' outta here durin the winter, so that means I'm stuck 'til spring. Well, shit.

Before we left, I paid me some good money to get some intel on our destination, and I hear tell that this here place is haunted. Now, I don't much believe in that sorta thing, but I sure as hell ain't stepping outside without my axe, all the same. As for these sods, well, lemme tell ya 'bout them, and you can think for yourself.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

These poor sods aren't gonna last one season without me, and that's assumin' we even survive long enough fer me to get outta here, so I'm keeping this here journal just in case they do manage to not get eaten by the time I go. This way, they might at least be able to figure out what I was goin t'a do, and they might just be ta do it themselves. Who knows.

For now, the first thing we need to do is get underground. The journey over here made me sick, and I'm not sure if I'll even be sane after a few more weeks in ta open air. There's hills o'er west, so I hand the first two fellas I see picks and draw 'em a picture of what I want dug. Basically, here's what I had 'em do:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That gives one big area for farmin' that we can irrigate or somepin with that pond, and another room next ta it for seeds, and the like. Then we've got an area across the way for storing eats, but I'm thinkin' I might turn it into a kitchen or a proper above-ground farm or some such later on. Next to that, we've got a temporary dining room- until these greenhorn miners bulk up enough to dig through rock- and a nice wide hallway inbetween. While that gets carved out, I'll have these others gather some wood and maybe forage for some food in these bushes. We've got enough supplies to last us for now, but you can never be too sure.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I never would'a thought all my military training would be used to hunt vermin, but these greenhorns got so scared by a sodding groundhog they couldn't see straight. It's gonna be a long year.

Just a quick note to whatever unhappy sod inherits this place, these greenhorns take things literally. Tell 'em ta "irrigate the farms" and they'll flood the entire bloody cave!

that's it for now, I'll get up another update later tonight or tomorrow more than likely. Any Dorfing requests or other comments?

If nobody minds a bit of a newbie joining, I'll happily take the 12th spot. I'm not an utter noob, been playing DF for a while (sometime in the 40d days, though I took a several-months break) and have had a couple successful fortresses. Also: first time poster, long time lurker.

No hard feelings if my request is vetoed. :)

I decided to get to know the sods I'd be shacking up with, so I pulled aside one of our woodcutters, BlackRogue she calls herself, and asked her a couple questions- you know, basic stuff. I didn't realize she'd give her entire life story, somebody oughta teach her that whole "less is more" mantra.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After that conversation, I went down to check on the status of our workshops, only to find the bottom level flooded with water. Great. And these greenhorns are so scared of the stuff, they refuse to dig through any wet rock unless I stand right there and babysit 'em! Armok, these sods are dumb.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The ways these things are laid out, we can lock any of 'em in there if need be- I've learned from experience to keep a solid door between myself and these craftin'-types when they get in one 'a dem "moods". For now, I reckon- what the hell? Why do I hear shouting?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well Armok be damned! This place really is haunted! There's sodding SKELETONS runnin' around! Granted, they ain't much tougher than their mortal cousins, but still.... damn. This is gonna be tougher than I figured. Trusty axe, never leaves my side.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Summer arrived just in time for the Helmet harvest to save from starvation- we had maybe enough rations for another week or so by the time they were finally ready to gather. The workshop/housing area is almost finished, as is the expanded storage floor- Armok knows these miners have had enough to work on, and it's finally startin' ta show. Never woulda thought I'd be sayin' this, but I'm almost proud of the fella's. It was nice ta finally sleep in me own bed for once, once we got the carpenters a place ta work.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then, right as things were settling down, and I was startin' to feel at home, a bunch o' dead critters showed up right on top of Flagpast. Noble protector and all, I took 'em out with my trusty axe, but I'm startin' to wish we'd settled on the other side of the brook.

Speakin' of feelin' at home, a group of fresh meat showed up some time last night. I asked 'em how they could make themselves useful, and they tell me there's a butcher, "fish dissector" whatever in Armok that means, a farmer, and a mason.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I tell the farmer and mason to get on inside, and then inform the butcher that he's to be a farmer as well. Then, I tell our fish-crazed migrant that HE'S gonna be Flagpast's first home-trained soldier. He tells me that he don't know the first thing about fightin', and I tell him to lose his fish fetish and run on off to our new barracks. Oh, I forgot to mention that, didn't I? Flagpast now has its very own outdoor barracks!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After me an' ta new recruit dealt with another round o' dead-but-not-dead groundhogs, I got the miners to build a couple 'a tables and some chairs and set up a rough dinin' hall. If we could solve our undead problem, this wouldn't be a half bad place to live. Then again, maybe it's for the better if I just keep whacking the zombies for now, and make sure ta teach the recruit how to handle himself without me. Never trust a trap to do a Dwarf's work, I always say.

Autumn has arrived, and I'll finish my turn and have the next update done later tonight I imagine. I'm planning on having one more update for Autumn/Winter, and then another one sort of explaining the state of affairs for, Kipi, I think is next? Also, now that some migrants have arrived, we can Dorf more people- just say which. One more note: the fish guy wouldn't train, so I ended up making him into a farmer and drafting the butcher instead.

Looks like the year is coming along nicely.

On the subject of dorfing, I wouldn't mind getting the poor fellow who was drafted.

Sure thing.

Well, I haven't got a smith yet (or hit metal ore) so most likely you're going to have to ask someone else later on.

Could you dorf me as miner?

I can do it when my turn begins, but better get the dwarf as early as possible so he can be introduced in the story as soon as possible.

Also, just noting that I know I'm next. Depending on when you are going to post the file and log, It may be that I can begin my turn Thursday evening after work. But after that it shouldn't take long.
