I'm not but... It's not some license or steam that will keep me from running a game.

(And yes, i realise that was unneeded, but you have to admit, that phrase sounds like something a pirate would say)

I Disagree. Despite citing law of a country that they aren't a part of. If steam did disappear overnight, and valve simply stopped existing. I would get cracks for all my games. I payed for them.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

And I agree with you. The industry doesn't though.

It's not illegal to crack a game you own.

Publisher licenses Steam to sell game, you buy game. Steam ends service....but they don't take your purchase with them.

Cracking/backing up games is the whole reason places like GameCopyWorld can stay up. They're claiming to provide files to allow users to play their own media without CDs. It's a thin pre-text, but it's kept them and many others out of trouble so far.

Tell that to rabid publishers. It scares me how much hate for cracking, no matter the reason, that they have.

To be fair, i have used GameCopyWorld for legitimate reasons at least a dozen times.

Yeah, reading through an EULA it seems the publishers think you shouldn't be allowed to do anything with the software you purchase except run it as-is. I think modding most games is technically illegal according to those, because they forbid modifying them in any way.

Modding in most games isn't actually editing them. It's having them read in different files. Like a warcraft 3 "mod" just loads a map, maybe some models. The game itself isn't edited. Same with Dwarf Fortress, you mod by changing the files it loads, not the game itself.

Technically it is against the EULA to alter the game's .EXE in any way, so unless there are laws that counter this, you can't crack games. On the other hand, making an image of a disk probably falls under making a copy of it as a backup, so you're free to do that. the status of mini-images is less clear, but they are probably an alteration of game data and thus against the EULA.

Also, publishers hate cracking because nearly all cracks are used for illegal copies. First of all, research indicates there may be as much as ten times more illegal copies of games then there are legal copies and secondly pretty much all illegal copies require cracks, meaning that even if all legal copies were cracked, 90% of the cracks would still be used for illegal purposes.

Also, there are many clauses in the EULAs that look very scary, but in the end are there for very sane and mundane reasons. For example, companies hold the right to alter the product without further notice and without the user having a say in it. This seams scary, but if it wasn't there they could never patch a product without tracking down every last user and ask them officially if they agree with the patch changes (which would get VERY messy with patches that repair loopholes people use to cheat at on-line games). Another one, the right to end the license is probably only legally invokable in the cases of cheating for on-line games, the distribution of illegal copies or usage of the program to hamper the companies financial status (relevant in the case of Gausian, which provides the source code on the condition that you do not in any way disclose this information to potential competition of the designers)

Add me to the list that absolutely hates, I repeat, hates Steam.  Their prices are high compared to the legal places I could get them, they have draconian DRM, are terrible for modders, spam you with advertising, and annoy you with the constant updating.  The list could go on and on.

...are you entirely sure that it is Steam you are talking about?

I was happily reading this thinking: Oh what a useful discussion on steams pros and cons.

Then I saw lumin's post, and just thought I'd disprove you in picture form!

As for the whole copyright thing, everyone knows I'm anti-copyright so I wont get in to it again.
