Its been posted before, you have to update. What if you liked some things that are taken away or nerfed with that update? What if you have really bad internet at the moment (like me) and just want to play the game?

6 more MB then it is finished updated. Didnt look at the numbers correctly 300 mb then its finished.

Who's fault is it if there is something that is taken away by the update? The company who made the damn game!

I went to into the game store and bought Warhammer 40k Chaos Rising, I was going to buy Napoleon Total War but it clearly had a steam (must connect to the internet) sign on the back. Chaos Rising didnt. When I go to install it comes up with the message that in order to play it I have to install Steam and Windows Live. Windows Live was clearly visible on the back and I accepted it, Steam was not. So I go and install steam, but now it says it has update it. It says it will be ready to play in 1 day. Fucking hell, is it possible for me just to install the fucking game on my computer and play it? I didnt want steam now I have to deal with this shit. I bought the game with my money and im playing on my god damn laptop which I payed for. Now im raging like the fist of the north star at Gabe and Steam. I want to play my mother fucking game, I dont care if I wont be able to play it online, how long does this shit take, havent they already verified it? I verified my account. Could someone please help?

So the main complaints here:

Had to install steam
Had to update game to latest version

OP would have known he had to install steam if he had paid closer attention, as it is marked on the box. OP could also have done a simple google search to find out that steam is required.

Updating your game is a very good practice which helps you avoid bugs. I don't see why this is a problem, except... (See next)

So none of these things have anything at all to do with steam. Steam does not impose its will on publishers, forcing them to use its DRM. They make that decision. Steam did not break your internet. What the fuck are you complaining about steam for again?

ITT: Shit ton of people who havent even read the thread. Do you think I came here first when I had this problem? No, I researched it. Im not going to even respond to your post Saint, because it is obvious you havent read the thread. Those are the same thing.
You can set it to not update it in the game settings on Steam.
And you can run it using the EXE (provided it's not a Steamworks game, which it doesn't seem to be) to bypass the update on the Steam launch.

Also, neither of those would be a problem if your internet was decent.

Exactly. You wouldn't even be complaining about the update if your internet was working normally.

And again, STEAM DID NOT DO ANYTHING TO YOU. You should redirect your rage at the company who decided to use Steam as DRM, not the DRM itself. This is like raging at a mechanic because dodge decided not to make the part for your car any more, causing a delay in your repairs. It's not the mechanic's fault, it is a decision the company made.

This is one of those cases where I hate to instigate shit but honestly...

If you bought a game that connects to Windows Live and Steam and blame the concurrent problem on steam and announce on a gaming forum that "steam is shit" rather than the actual problem of publisher/developer being lazy dumbasses and their decision to use steam in the first place and half-ass their updating, then you're probably not going to see the answers you wish to see.

You can't blame developers for using steam when it reduces pirating and actually gets people to buy games (Which market research has shown that it works) but you can blame them for forcing you to update and download shit.

These problems vary game by game, developer by developer.

Hell, great developers like Arcen games, who made AI Wars: Fleet Command uses steam but you can download different versions of the game directly from their website as long as you can prove you own it through serial key.

Personally I love steam, but I can see where huesoo is coming from. Being forced to update can be a bitch. Obviously if you have a 50meg connection with no download limit it's not much of an issue, but I have a friend who lives in New Zealand and the best connection he can get is pay-by-the-gig downloads, meaning being forced to update every game on his steam can become very expensive.

Telling someone "get a better internet connection" isn't really very helpfull if there isn't a better option available.
