I'm sure you could download some kind of crack for preventing you needing to connect to steam for the game, it's what I did with empire total war. Steam is an annoying god damn virus.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but this is really fucking stupid. You could live with downloading and patching Steam, which is most certainly NOT a virus, or you can download a crack, which has an extremely high chance of in fact containing a "god damn virus" that you seem to hate so much. It seems pretty simple which option is better if you ask me.

I don't think you bought Empire Total War. Legitimate users using Steam have no reason to ever crack a game they own. That's one of the advantages to using to Steam in the first place!

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Run steam in offline mode after getting the games?

You are aware that E:TW runs perfectly well in Offline mode, right? I just tested, to be sure.

As for the vehement assertion that Steam is a 'virus': what makes you say that? The memory consumption is roughly equal to Chrome with 3 Bay12 Forum tabs open, which is absolutely trivial, and it's draining so little CPU that the task manager reports a flat "00%", so performance isn't the issue. I've never heard of any private information being transmitted, assuming you don't agree to send hardware details for their survey. So: Why do you consider Steam to be an "annoying god damn virus"?

Note that this is completely false. While a crack probably wouldn't help in this case (the patching is probably piecemeal, so it might be in a fucked up state at the moment), a crack has a negligible chance of infecting your computer, unless of course you just google "chaos rising crack" and download from the sketchiest site that comes up, in which case you'll probably get infected just from visiting it (and there's also probably no crack on it, because that takes more effort than spamming keywords and screwing with the google rankings).

(last I checked you can disable automatic updating,)

No you can't, there is an option to disable updating but it doesn't do anything, I'm pretty sure all it does is pause the download of updates, but if steam detects an update for your game you can not play it until you update it.  The only way to prevent updates is to run offline mode 24/7.

Personally I have a like/hate with all my heart relationship with steam, It's okay because the games are cheap and the downloader auto-throttles pretty good so I can actually do shit while it downloads.

Also apparently there was an issue with Pacific storm where you get screwed if you buy the game on steam because the latest patch that enables multi-threading never got authorized so you gimp your own game if you use steam.

I hate it because I'm sure you read one of my posts of steam erasing a 7gb game for a 1mb patch, and the fact that if its downloading something it turns from relatively stable to crashing every chance it gets.

It's the same thing for ArmA2 but honestly... that's not steam's fault.

That's the publisher/developer fucking up their auto-updating. As much as I love Bohemia Interactive, they don't know how to integrate their PBO updater with steam, when there's plenty of other games that can update without redownloading 7gigs for an update. Hence the last 1.7 patch for ArmA2 REDOWNLOADING THE ENTIRE GAME at 7 gigs on steam even after I manually updated the game through the 500 meg patch from BI's website.

Good thing I have fast internet.

Just gonna say, no problems whatsoever with Steam. It works beautifully for me, my games are constantly up to date, and I can see all of friends who are online and what they are playing. Admittedly, I only really use Valve games on it, but eh.

Also, I really wish I could go back to the old steam client layout. I hate the more recent one.

The Pacific Storm issue sounds interesting... but I can't find anyone complaining about it. In fact, I found a Steam forum post by the developer claiming that the Steam version of the game is the most recent version of the game available (1.6). And the Steam forums are usually quick to complain about these sorts of things.  ;)

As for a 7GB game re-downloading instead of patching... it's unfortunate, but it's not Steam's fault. I've never had to redownload a game for any patch, whether it be for a Valve-developed or third-party game, so it's obviously possible to patch Steam games. If your game's publishers can't be bothered to assemble a patcher, that's largely their fault.

I know I sound fanboi-ish here, but seriously - I've found most of the complaints against Steam to be frivolous and/or uninformed.

Steam is cheap and has never given me any trouble. Usually much better than other direct download sites (horrible drm sometimes). My only gripe is that it wants you to patch stuff and wont let you play in offline mode if you haven't run it yet (I installed it through steam....)

90% of all complaints about Steam I've seen cite one of two specific CA games(ETW and NTW) or one specific Relic game(DoW2 and it's expansion) as the reason Steam sucks.

Why can't anyone accept the possibility that these 2 developers might just be continuing their longstanding tradition of horribly failing to integrate third party services into their games instead of raging on Valve?

Well Pacific storm also isn't one of those mainstream games with thousands of players... its behind closed doors stuff I guess, I've played it and it does have a problem with no multi-threading (Even having an option to select multi-threading but you can't enable it.)

I've stated that my main problem with (windows live including) it is that Steam is mandotory, if I it was an option I could choose from the start then I wouldnt mind, I would've selected not to install steam, then when my internet wasnt a being retarded and the guys from BT(my internet company, they where supposed to come tommorow but they never did) would fucking do their job I would install Steam.

I'll edit the speed of my connection and how much is left in a bit.

This is a very funny mental image when you imagine the foreigner as a Mario look-alike.

Luckily its sped up alot, last night it was around 16 to 23 kbs, now it is 40 to 60 kbs. (keeps going down and up) So far its updated 5,908.3 MB out of 6,670.5 MB. It is also started dowloading Dawn of War 2, even though I havent bought it.

It went down to 25 kbs, but then went up to 48kbs and it seems to be staying there.

This looks like the "Can't be assed to read disk beyond the serial" problem that comes from a lazy developer tacking the steamworks code directly onto the setup file without reading the manual. No solution beyond bitchslapping Relic and telling them to stop copy pasting large chunks of code after the product went through QA.
