Sorry to be a dick but dude - "I bought this game and the guys who made it decided to not advertise their reliance on a third party program! Fuck that third party program, I'll never forgive them for this!"

I've not had more problems with steam than I've had with any other software I've used. It's got a few flaws that are annoying but it's got more utility than drawbacks. Facebook hatedom I understand, but not so much Steam hatedom.

I completely understand the level of being pissed by the OP. _IF_ its really true, and I have a little bit of a hard time believing that. There's probably some fine print, and if he brought an electrone microscope, like every responsible shopper these days, he probably wouldnt have fallen for it.

What pisses _me_ off, personally, is the sheeple attitude when it comes to steam. It seems there is almost no grey area, people love it or hate it. And nobody seems to notice steam what it really is: intrusive annoying and insulting DRM with lots and lots of convenience.

Is it THAT hard to see both?

On the other hand... if steam really is THAT convenient... why wouldnt valve be so nice and untie all our games from steam. You know, give us the much promoted convenience without actually getting on our nerves with all the hoops we have to jump through.

For instance... What if I own a theoretical game, let's called it... Pocket Snooker. I really like Pocket Snooker, so I bought it on Steam, because it was so cheap. My friends and I, we enjoy playing Pocket Snooker together. A lot. But with patch 2.3 they really really nerfed ball slip. My friends and I totally prefer the sweaty ball feel of 2.2.

But we bought it on steam and so we're fucked, we cannot choose which version to play.

In all fairness, if enough people complain about this phenomenon, valve will probably do something about it (Probably)... but why? because they want to, like everybody else, shove their DRM down our throats.

At least they give us some whipped cream with a cherry on top to go along with all the forced deepthroating.

Just wanted to chime in to say that I have rarely had problems with steam, and this game specifically I bought on release day (both for DoW2 and its expansion) and they worked perfectly when purchased through steam.

Then again, I have broadband.

The only mention of Steam is on the back, once in fine print. Then it says next to a 2 headed eagle Which says STEAMWORKS with 3 blocks in the corner, the letters are black against a dark blue color, I tottaly missed it. It doesnt have any Valve signs anywhere. Other than that its back to 20ish kbs range, with 6,260.8 MB dowloaded so far! 93% FUCK YEAH!

Im wireless broadband on a laptop, fuck BT.

Well, as I said, it's your own goddamn fault not carrying around an electrone microscope when you go shopping! Shame on you!

I don't see why there are so many complaints about steam. Sure, it has some minor inconveniences(like being unable to play a new game without updating it. DOW2's patches do add a huge amount of content though) but as far as I'm concerned it is DRM done right. The protection is not unbreakable, but it's relatively good, and it provided some level of convenience to the user instead of ridiculous attempts at stopping pirates. DRM is not innately bad, developers do have to protect their games, it's just that most attempts at it inconvenience the people who buy the game without effecting the pirates. Steam doesn't put the pirates ahead of the actual consumers, so in the end it does it's job with minimal hassle.

Okay, you say you're annoyed by the 'sheeple' (god I hate that term) who either jump on the love/hate bandwagons and how there's no moderates, despite the plentiful people displaying moderate viewpoints (such as myself), then you follow up with jumping on the hatewagon with the other 'sheeple'. Go you.

Valve *could* disconnect all their games from the service and not require finniky online/offline settings (Which, according to some malcontent on steam forums, were jury rigged. They're dodgy enough for me to believe them, but it doesn't worry me.) and not need to update games all the time and developers could probably learn to code compatibility properly, but y'know what? they don't. They don't have to. That kinda sucks but frankly, there are far more mercenary companies in the gaming industry which do far, far more irritating shit that's detrimental to the 'gamer culture' which most of us sortof imagine which deserve far more scrutiny than they get. Hell, even though they've been in the spotlight alot lately, just look at anything Ubisoft or Activision do. Some of THAT is intrusive annoying and insulting DRM. Steam in my long history of using it is no more annoying that CD keys or disk checking. Seriously.

It is not intrusive and annoying. It's a DRM solution that works. I don't care for DRM, but of any system of DRM I've ever encountered it's by far the best. It's a service that has saved me hundreds of dollars, better yet, I'm able to share my library of games with my brother who now lives on the other side of the US. The only time I've had a problem with steam it was a minor one that was resolved in the span of two days. Valve successfully creates the Holy Grail of DRM, where it benefits the consumer and doesn't help the pirates. Every other DRM system I've seen is quite the opposite. I don't consider it "Shoving" Down my throat when I voluntarily purchase non-steam requiring games through steam. Furthermore, Steam can save the hassle of more annoying non-steam DRM solutions.

I love steam, Call me a "Sheeple" if you want (God I hate that term.). However, it gives much, much more than it takes.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Its annoying and intrusive by the fact that it is mandatory and that you have to fully update a game before you can play it.

Yes, how terrible that you must apply useful updates before playing your game.

It's mandatory for very few games. I'm sorry you didn't realize yours was one of them. What's the problem with needing to update? I like that I don't have to hunt down patches for every game I own.

If it was annoying then I wouldn't have 156 games on Steam.

Its been posted before, you have to update. What if you liked some things that are taken away or nerfed with that update? What if you have really bad internet at the moment (like me) and just want to play the game?

6 more MB then it is finished updated.
Didnt look at the numbers correctly 300 mb then its finished.

To be fair, his nerdrage is directed more at the fact that he bought the game in a store and must, for some reason, connect to an online service to play.
