This game is just wow. Ive only done a few missions but they are so tense, makes you feel almost like a real hacker link to steam page
This game is not going to help the paranoid. :P Now discuss!

Good concept. It just starts to get repetitive after a while. I loved the format at first, but after a couple hours, I started to feel a little trapped by just interacting with the console. And the routine of building cash on easy missions just so you can access more secure systems wore thin.

I would like to see them make an Uplink 2, and flesh out more of a game world. And maybe provide more solutions to hacking other than requiring the right program, and having a good PC. Maybe take a few hints from Console about the level of player creativity.

They are apperently planning to release the source code for Uplink in the near future (after having just released Darwinia and Multiwinia!) Mayhaps some cool mods will appear soon.

I found managing my bounce network more tedious then running the missions. At least the missions could be tense, even the easy ones. But rebuilding your network of admin computers to bounce trough after a difficult mission was rather annoying. Still intend to go back and do the story line though

As long as they dont make uplink 2 a puzzle game it will be good. Or shooter. Or even roguelike.

I think the makers officialy said there will not be an Uplink 2. they believed Uplink was good because it was original, and Uplink 2 would not be original...

and actually, they did release the source-code, but its £35 or something, and under a very restrictive license

Great little game, but I do have to agree with nenjin as to the repetition. I find the beginning to mid part of the game to be my favourite, where you're still struggling for cash and you have new toys to look forward to buying. There are still new missions to deal with every little while at this point to keep the challenge fresh'ish and you're not required to be a "hacking" god. Nearer the end game I lose interest and move on to something else due to feeling as if I'm just repeating the same few missions over and over with different names pasted into the mission briefs.

I always come back for awhile though. It's great fun while it lasts, and for lengevity there are also some great mods.

As for sequels, nadda. Introversion has emphatically stated that there will be no Uplink II. They believe in innovation and do not want to fall prey to sequelitis. I respect their stance, but I'll be damned if I wouldn't love to see another Uplink game. But I'd rather wish for a sequel to a great single game entry than to be disapointed by Uplink IV: Modern Hacker II.

Odd to think that Uplink is old enough that the future setting to the game now takes place in our past. Where's my cane?

Maybe Subversion will scratch a bit of itch for wanting an Uplink remake. Or maybe it'll just be awesome all by itself.

Yes, constantly rebuidling your tracer networks go SO old, SO fast. It would have made more sense for the game to just automatically generate tracer networks when you chose a target. The only reason against building the biggest network you could was the amount of clicks and "twang!' sounds you had to put up with.

This has been my core problem with them. The slavish adherence to innovation. I didn't try Darwinia, but I looked at it and it just screamed "we're being different because different is good!" Uplink managed to catch my attention, but little else they've done has. I respect people's right to choose innovation over everything else....but I put fun and cool factor above innovation in importance.

Also, when you leave a game with a great gaping hole where more could go in, I find flatly rejecting expanding it to be a dodge. That's where the comparison between Bay12 and Introversion explodes. Toady sees where gameplay can expand, and he expands it while staying true to what he likes. I haven't seen that same commitment out of Introversion.

I really enjoy the atmosphere in Uplink but I never finished the main plot. Robbing banks can ruin the challenge as once you figure out which logs need deleting and can do that fairly, money quickly becomes no object. I admit I got caught the first few times though. I really should go back and play the story through, I've been meaning to.

Maybe Subversion will scratch a bit of itch for wanting an Uplink remake. Or maybe it'll just be awesome all by itself.
Can't describe how much I'm looking forward to this.

snip

I tried Darwinia first and enjoyed every minute of it, multiwinia has it's moments too. I agree that they should of expanded on the ideas in Uplink and released a sequel but with Uplink being my favourite Introversion game I would say that. I hope Subversion will be it's spiritual successor as, given what we know so far, hacking seems thematically appropriate.

It generates the city and the buildings inside of said city and you had through the city with your agents and hacking skills to get in places and do missions.

So they don't went from one to another, it's all part of it.

Our Subversion B12 thread is here, btw.

The "Blue Valley theme" (specifically, the first 2 minutes or so) are really epic.
