How do I get my dwarves to migrate into the cavern?
« on: July 09, 2010, 02:36:26 pm »

I have a nice forward base set up(Courtesy of miner) and am waiting for the rest of them to show up.
I even tried:
Assigning to a burrow
Designating a meeting hall below.
______
Just so you know, I channeled up and down at intervals like this:G=Surrounding C=Channel

GCz-1
CGz-2

How would I bring the dwarves to the bottom?
I can't seem to get them to go down at all.

You've probably got bad ramps.

Remember, in order for a ramp to function properly, you need:

1. A ramp adjacent to a wall.
2. A floor tile on top of this wall.

If you check the tiles around your ramp you will most likely find that they do not meet this criteria. They will either be ramps adjacent to walls with walls on top, or ramps adjacent to floor tiles with floor tiles one level up. Either case will not work.

So all your dwarves are hanging around outside, which is something you don't want?

Which means I should use stairs instead?

I suppose you could make ramps like this:

Code: [Select]
xd     0
xx

xr     -1
xd

xx     -2
dr

dx     -3
rx

d=dug
r=ramp
x=surrounding

I'll try that with the next fortress.

You could also just use stairs. Ramps are a little complicated. Stairs are pretty much foolproof.

Did you put their hospital, beds, alcohol and food barrels down there?

All you need to do is dig down there. Set up a meeting zone there, and dwarves will head on over to hang out in the meeting zone if they have no jobs.

Also, make sure you destroyed the original wagon.

True story. Dwarves treat the starting wagon like a meeting zone. The only way to make dwarves stay away from the wagon is to highlight it (q) and deconstruct it (x). You'll need a dwarf assigned to do carpentry for the dissasembly.

Not correct--if you have a dining hall and\or statue garden, no dwarves or animals will idle at the wagon. This has proved out in my last 10+ forts :D I never remove the wagon, it's a symbol of the hard-pressed expedition that founded the fortress, it must be protected from invaders and buildingdestroyers, berserking assholes, and the like. Think of it as your fortress' Flag :)

If you want them down there, put their food, drink, workshops and bedrooms down there, and don't put any of those things on the surface.
