there seems to be no land connecting two of the continents on my map, is it possible to travel between them?

Swimming.

Or more dwarven:
If there is only one tile between them, build a bridge (in fort mode)!
I made one out of floors and petrified wood :D

if their only one ocean square apart you can walk to the beach on one side, enter travel mode, and then exit on the other side.

Or be a real dwarf and use the caverns.

It'll take almost as long to swim. It takes forever to swim any noticeable distance. If you do though, you do gain the legendary swimming attribute as a side effect.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

The trouble with swimming is if you get hungry or thirsty you begin to drown.  (Or has that been changed?)  The big problem is that if you hold down the arrow key to move, by the time you see your adventurer flashing hungry/thirsty it's too late; the game has a backlog of arrow keypresses and you'll drown waiting for it to finish processing them before you get a chance to stop and eat.

Hmmm...  I should write an autoswim program that sends arrow keypresses interspersed with commands to eat and drink every 150 tiles or so.  (Before you start you'd have to tell it which letters in your inventory screen are food and water.)

Or, wait for winter and cross the iced-over ocean!

(I admit, I tried but got bored after a while so I cannot claim to having succeeded in crossing the ocean, but I'm sure the principle is sound)
