Are you sure?  I haven't atom-smashed any, but I have sent many a troll plummeting to magmariffic doom by retracting bridges under them many times, and retracting bridges use the same size limit as atomsmashers.  Checking the raws shows that trolls have a size of 250000, which is smaller than that of many domestic animals who I know can be atomsmashed.

Goblins do bring other pets such as jabberers and rutherers which are bridge-immune, and if one of them were standing on a drawbridge at the same time as a troll it would prevent the bridge from activating.
