Browser-based text-based RPG: Domain of Heroes
« on: July 09, 2010, 06:57:23 am »

After discovering Illyriad, a city-building/war browser-based game that is currently played by 30 Bay12ers, I decided to look for a quality RPG browser-based game.

Introduction
Domain of Heroes is a text-based RPG, meaning a lot of locations, events, and items are described mainly by text. There are still graphical illustrations to help visualise things (such as travelling from one location to another), which I prefer than having a pure text interface like MUDs.

I just started playing so I can't say much at this point, but the following features make this game attractive to me:
  • Persistent-world; no resets.
  • Premium items do not break the game balance; they are limited for convenience (i.e. extra carrying capacity) or cosmestic (i.e. having a custom colour in chat) purpose.
  • Countless combination of classes (from bard to paladin to ninja), races (from dwarf to squirrel to troll), intention (similar to alignment), and factions to choose for.
  • Multiple characters per account (the first four are free), although only one can be active at a time.
  • We can form a guild. *coughs* Slaves to Armok *coughs*
  • Now, my favourite part: Your character can be instructed to 'grind' even when you're not online (similar to how Godville works). When his life is low, he will return to inn for healing.

More information on: The Great Codex

My character is a Dragon Pirate named Arrador. He has devious intention (will do evil deeds for money) and is under the faction Legion (the evil faction).

A Dragon Ninja character sounds awesome. But a Dragon Pirate sounds even better. I'll be thinking about this...

I wanted to be a Squirrel Assassin but a high level player already does so.  :P

Do we all need to be the same faction to form a guild?

Yes. And it takes 5 wishes to form a guild, but I already earned 2 free ones by signing up on survey websites.

EDIT: Anyway, I'm not sure I will keep on playing this. Apparently it has a loot system like Diablo (with random prefixes and suffices) and my character specialises in Magic Finding so he's been finding a lot of items. I have to go through a whole list of items and sell the crappy ones at the inn. Too much micro-management for my taste.

If I do decide to stop playing and you want to be a pioneer in this game, let me know, so I can change the referral link in the original post to yours.

If it took you a whole 2 hours to lose interest...the rest of us don't exactly have much incentive to try it out.

As much as I'd like to promote good things about this game, I'd also like to mention the things I dislike.

I actually tried to compare this against the MUD Achaea. My problem with Achaea was it was too complex (and therefore, taking too much time to learn and play for a browser-based game). This game seems to not be overly complex and time-consuming, but at the same time, not overly simple and monotone.

The loot system is actually interesting. I just feel overwhelmed by the variety of items I've looted off monsters. Instead of the usual Chain Mail +2, I have Joyful Chain Mail of Inferno. And variety isn't actually a bad thing.

When we have a guild, we can put the good but unneeded items in guild vault and distribute them to whoever needs them.

Anyway, I'm still playing. I left my character to do AFK-grind last night and found out he just finished his quest.  :)

edit: tried it, wondered why i couldn't do anything in combat, checked a guide, and realised the little tab where combat options appear wasn't there for some reason. so i got bored and left

edit nm it works now, i found asbestos bracers, can't wait to get cancer!

Where are you guys now? I'm at Elvenwood mainly.

Anyway, the best Magic Finder combination is Jack Orc, according to a senior player. Jack is a class that provides bonus to MF, while Orc has excellent combat skill to keep this combination combat-worthy. Once I have good gears, I may use them to twink an evil race (i.e. Kobold, Goblin, etc.).

Okay, I just defeated a mini-boss who had a lot of tentacles. It was level 9, I was level 10. Arrador the Dragon Pirate pwned this tentacleous monstrosity.  It may be time for now to venture further than Elmwood.

Now that there's interest, I might check this out.  Now to decide class... (Jack, Chemist, Pirate, Rogue, and Scout are the choices.  I'll go with race after I pick class.)
