My opening post. Updates sporadically of course.

Word came in today that the boys down in comms have finally got the subspace communications tech working properly. It'd been theory for a long time, but finally the Tri-Planetary area will be able to have instantaneous messaging.
They've also turned up some weird signals on the tests. It's probably nothing, but I'm having them do a thorough check on it.

Results from the subspace checks came into day. Gave me the shock of my life.
The results show numerous encrypted subspace signals operating on various bands. We're not yet sure what to make of this, but I think there's a strong possibility that there's an alien influence in the area.
It's just our luck, growing easy in the long quiet and suddenly finding ourselves with multiple potentially hostile alien factions in our very back yard.
Hopefully though, they suffer from the same lack of faster than light travel that we do, and there won't be any nasty surprises waiting for us.
Right now, it seems as though we just have to keep trying to figure out where those signals are coming from

The comms boys can't be right. Using the tri-planetary network, they've triangulated the origins of the signals to three locations closer to our star.
If they're right, we're not at arms length from these guys... they've snuck right up behind us and whispered in our ear.
I've ordered the construction of some probes to send at them, we'll get a good look at these things one way or another.
General's Log. Date: 2397.1
The probes found their targets. I don't know what to tell you... seems as though the spacial anomaly that brought the fiftieth fleet here must have torn local space a new one, because we've got ruptures in space on our hands.
The probes came back with strange energy readings from the locations they investigated. The squints are calling them wormholes, but I always thought those things were forever 'theoretical' in nature.
Quite by accident a probe slipped through, and survived long enough to transmit information about where it landed. Astronomers have matched it up to a nearby star, meaning that these things might not lead all that far away.
Sturdier probes are already in development to investigate these gateways more thoroughly.
General's Log. Date: 2398.2
We've finally lost contact with the last of the probes, but the results speak for themselves. Seems like there's a network of these gateways, and we have no idea how long it goes on for.
Project Heron has already begun, with colonists gearing up to expand the Unification across the remaining local worlds, while Project Shield should protect us as we get our bearings.
Meanwhile, a few brave souls prepare for Project Intrepid to send them off into the great unknown, with the possibility of never returning.

Finally, we stand on the eve of a new era of exploration. Project Intrepid is just weeks away from launching its first ship, and they're already prepping the last of the requirements for the colony ships, so they should be flying not long after.
I'm to give something of a speech at the inauguration of each of these new vessels, but heaven knows what I'm going to say. This kind of thing hasn't been done since we ventured from Earth.
