Don't get me wrong, I enjoy eyecandy just as much as the next 20-something, but I also deeply enjoy constructing worlds, telling epic tales, and citybuilding games. And I play MUDs, so Dwarf Fortress's visual style and user interface isn't really that odd to me.

DF can only be beaten by people who are at least as awesome as DF. And because awesome people are too busy writing music/acting/being dead/Chuck Norris-ing, they have not been able to play it.

Show him the mermaid thread. If he remains both bored and unamused, and without any hint of being horrified, he is probably a Terminator robot sent back in time to kill you. If this is the case, he must be disposed of immediately, making sure to keep traces of his machinery from surviving and tainting the timeline. Alternatively, he may just be old and boring. In which case, tell him to go back to playing his solitaire.
