Lame Dwarf Fortress > Awesome [insert any mainstream game here]
If you can climb the 50-foot barbed wire difficulty wall associated with it, which, TBH I am having trouble doing.

There's a 30-part video tutorial that covers the basics. :D

And Dwarf Fortress rocks! But that's just my opinion!

Bronzemurder is what got me interested in playing Dwarf Fortress, so try that. I think I started with 31.03- I learned the basics from the Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial (which is written for 40d), but I've only played DF2010, and by bothering someone else with incessant questions.  I got someone else interested, someone who loudly proclaimed DF was lame, awful, and broken- showed them Bronzemurder and sent them to the massive YouTube tutorial, and they're still playing a couple weeks later.

Out of possible descriptions, I wouldn't say that DF is broken. Some things need work, but it definitely isn't broken.

Toady's unnatural speed with bugfixes leads me to think he may have made a pact with Those Who Hide Behind The Stars and/or began the process of becoming a cyborg.

Had no idea so few teenagers played Dwarf Fortress.

I think most teens are busy on facebook... Or they're watching porn.

Or both  ;D

Well, I'm a teenager and I've gotten three other teenagers and my father interested in Dwarf Fortress.
I don't like Facebook tbh. It bores me, especially all those small games on the site. What the carp is so fun about Farmville? You guys should try out the application "Farm Villain", it let's you post some stuff on your "wall" that makes fun of Farmville.

Facebook is evil. It puts on a facade of being an innocent site so you'll put up your information, and that information is then sold to others so the site can be funded.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

I am also a Teenage Casual Dwarf Fortress player. I also hate rap and generally research my opinions pretty extensively. So yeah.

That said, I don't think DF is lame. I really enjoy the challenge and the fact that it's not a focus on graphics and eye candy like so many modern games and more a focus on gameplay and making your own stories. Which is why it's fun to those of us with hyperactive imaginations.

I'm currently making a nice room for my legendary clerk. I always treat my legendaries with the greatest respect, giving them the best rooms and so on. Although the walls are mostly engraved with pictures of my miner starving to death after he fell down a well, so it's not too cheerful.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.
