I'm rushing through all the scenarios for honour.
Not much strategy, just zerging.

It's just too much work to assign orders and place ships over an over again.
What a pain...

You think that's a pain, try doing it with that fighter trick I illustrated earlier.  Create a squadron, set it to one ship, give it orders and placement, create another squadron, do it again...  So on and so on for as many squadrons as you have pilots, and then go back and max out each and every squadron you placed.

Looks pretty awesome though.  It's like there's this gigantic swarm of space-bees.

This game seems to be as moddable as DF, and in the same way. I'm experimenting with making a new Fighter for the Empire.

There's a mass-deployment button if you're using a lot of one design.

And you can also save orders for a particular ship style so that you don't have to set it again on subsequent ships of the same type.  Quite handy, although mass-selecting and then ordering everyone also works fairly well.

Easy way to get honor is to mod the starting scenario's allowed cost insanely high then hit it with a normal fleet. Honor is calculated based on how far below par your fleet was, so you will get an insane amount.

Saves hours of grinding just to unlock some hulls/systems you want to use.

You can just edit the amount of honor you have in the .txt files. It's DF-style moddable.

Welp, I've always been a sucker for Steam sales, so... yeah.  ;D

Any suggestions on how to use armour? My 'armoured cruiser' lasted a whole 15 seconds on the field, and according to my final readout the armour ate/bounced less than 5% of the damage. How much armour do you have to layer on for a decent defense? Or is armour always just "that backup layer while your shield does the real work"?

Pretty much just this.  Armor takes up slots that could've been used for shields, and it generally doesn't provide enough protection to warrant the tradeoff.

Under certain circumstances (high radiation), armor becomes more viable because shields don't work quite as well.  In such cases, I'd probably recommend using an armored cruiser design with long-range frigates backing them up from behind the defensive wall.  Cruisers can pack more slots of heavier armor, and they even have access to repair stations (which work quite well with armor).  While the big boys take the beating, have the weakling frigates shoot plasma, missiles or torpedoes at the offending dudes.

Still though, shields are almost always superior.

Got it. I was kind of suspicious when I sent shielded units into a -50% shield anomaly... and they still outlived my armoured vessels.  :o

I'll probably be picking it up sometime this weekend, as the only reason I didn't get it during the other Steam sales was because it wasn't discounted enough for my tastes. But ~$7? Sure.

[EDIT:] I am now the owner of a copy of Gratuitous Space Battles and the 3 DLC.
