I really enjoyed FMA, but it really dragged on at the end.  I was not satisfied by the ending, to the point that I can't remember exactly what happened.

You could do an 'actual' fight to the death very simply. Just add in a couple rules to make it interesting.

1. No immortal characters. Norse gods good, Greek gods bad.
2. If it can be killed but regenerates (or reincarnates) at a later date, the first death counts.
3. For added fun, randomly group the submissions into teams for tag-team matches.
