No, he needs it to avoid the equivalent exchange of human transmutation. To make lead into gold you don't need to offer that much. But to make a human, you must offer pretty much another human. Therefore, to get their bodies back Ed and Al need to avoid sacrificing human lives to do it.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch.
