Is it possible to electrify water?
« on: July 08, 2010, 03:31:46 pm »

I am using a bait trap to bring in mermaids(I know, I'm evil) and I'm wondering if I need to protect my axles.

Electricity doesn't exist in DF yet, unfortunately.

Most aquatic creatures aren't building destroyers, so I don't think you need to worry.

I wish.
Axles transmit rotation, not electrical currents.

Electricity, while awesome, is highly unlikely to ever exist in DF, as Toady has mentioned that he wants to keep the tech level at a semi-medieval point (which is to say, you'll never refine bauxite into aluminum, but you can drop magma on goblins all day). I could be wrong in the case of electricity, but I don't consider it likely.

Maybe there will be no controlled electricity, but it does exist in nature, and thus has to be implemented eventually.

I'm curious as to what gave you the impression that electricity even exists in DF.

Well, the wikipedia page for Dwarf Fortress has in the past had blatant lies on it concerning the game mechanics, so I wouldn't be surprised if it said there was electricity at some point.

I'm sure that electricity will be implemented in some form eventually.

If you agree with various theories, some of the ancient civilisations (notably the egyptians) had batteries which were capable of electroplating (albeit taking a long time), so in terms of technology and usage, a limited from of electricity for electroplating could be slotted in without breaking Toady's guidelines on tech level.

not sure how much game use it could actually be though.

Most probably the logic: "machinery transmits power. Power = electricity in our modern civilisation. This must be the case for dwarves too!"

Mechanical power, not electrical power, is what DF deals with.

Well, I can't wait to electrocute entire oceans with my electric power.
Fishing to the extreme.
Nah, dwarfy fishing.

there must be some electrical impulses inside a dwarf's brain.  Catch a mermaid and smash a dwarf into her pond.  Record results!
