any way to flush a brook?
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:07:51 am »

so my rbrook finally froze over and i took the opportunity to damn it with 4 floodgates, ok sure

but now its draining at an alarmingly slow rate

very slowly.. isnt it supposed to get 'flushed' as soon as the water supply stops?

theres no diagnols, except for the failed attempt at a underground farm plot..

why is it draining so slow?

It's draining slowly because it's just flowing off the map. It will take a while, but that's perfectly normal.

Yep. Basically, all of that water can only escape the map through the four open tiles at the map edge. You can expedite the process by widening the brook, which will help increase the evaporation rate, or by pumping water out of the brook and onto dry land where it will, again, evaporate. You cannot, to the best of my knowledge, dig out the tiles on the map edge to increase the area the water can drain off of.

Or, if the entire brook freezes, you can simply mine out the entire brook's worth of ice. The Ice "rocks" will melt down into puddles of water instead of 1/7's of water.

That's what I did at my fortress in order to make the channel to fill the cavern reservoir I drained. It takes about half a year to drain the latter half of the brook without pumps.
