Swords for us, individual-choice melee if we're desperate. Sucks to grasp cat-sized animals' toes with wrestler moves.

Spears.  I love equiping my fortress/royal guard with them.  Just something regal about them and some sort of guard in formal dress.
Maces are cool too but my military gets axes or swords.

The ability of swords and axes to take organic enemies apart always impresses me. And the tactical advantage of spears and crossbows is something I've been wanting to see for a long time.
But in the end, due to the current load of bugs, all I end up with these days is Marksdwarves that eventually get re-kitted to Hammerdwarves, because they've been bashing their foes with crossbows for the last five years  >:(

EDIT: Scratch that. Just now, a dragon popped up. And my only axedwarf, on her way to a sparring match, killed it within two pages of combat report, sustaining no injuries at all. She practically just waltzed through that megabeast without so much as being distracted by it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Consider: No injuries, and only two pages of report log, and there goes a decapitated dragon. Thousand year life-span? Not anymore!

From now on, I'm all cutting weapons.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

It's possible that it was a young dragon?

Do young dragons get their own special announcement and spit 15x5 cones of fire?  ???

Yeah, there's no actual difference between a young dragon and an old one save for the fact that young ones are much easier to kill because of their size (apparently).

I once beheaded a dragon in two strikes with a greatsword, only for someone to point out that it was probably quite young.

HAH! But it was only an IRON axe!
Seriously now. Don't ruin my effortless triumph  :'(

Doesn't say "young" anywhere here. May I bask in the glory of my supreme Axedwarfess now?  :D

Cutting weapons have been overpowered since .31 (when I started playing DF) and crossbows have been bugged, so all my dwarves carry axes. And a battleaxe just seems more dwarfy to me.

I prefer to kit ou my dwarves Roman fashion, with a sword and shield.

Artifact Adamantine Battle Axes.  I have two so far, and I'm eventually hoping I can kit out my whole squad of seven with them.

They do this:

No muss, no fuss, just clean simple lopping off of parts.

Weapon of choice?
I choose drunken brawler dwarf fists.

Wrestlers are terrifying against anything of a size under 10 most of the time.
