The Oil Blue
« on: July 07, 2010, 04:26:18 am »

I just saw this has finally launched and was surprised it wasn't mentioned before. It's rather quite fun, lovingly designed, and possibly one of the finest examples of mastering GameMaker I've ever seen.

Basically its an oil drilling sim (although rather action packed as well) and you must reclaim old islands to drill on, buy and upgrade equipment, and so on. You also can operate the machinery manually and conduct repairs, which are mainly puzzle-like minigames. Rather fun and there's a demo out on their page (full version is only $15 and DRM free, though).

The sparse art is quite pretty and the design in all reminds me a lot of the Art Deco of Bioshock.

Check it out, I'm getting a lot of fun out of it myself!

I downloaded the demo. It seems to be interesting, though a lot of button mashing and mindless time management.

I don't think I will pick it up, but the demo amused me for an hour.

Omg, an Oil sim! I love oil games. I found an incredibly amusing one a while back, ill post the link here. Its a tongue in cheek global oil corperation sim where you can shoot whining protesters and invade iraq and plant oil wells and eventually use humans for fuel when oil runs out. Epic.

Oilgarchy isn't really tongue-in-cheek, the developers seem to take the whole idea of "oil companies are evil, only environmentalists can save us" as seriously, and made this game to try and convince others of this.

I guess I could do an LP of it, since I remembered talking to Little who didn't know how to "win", when I "won". It could act as a strategy guide.

I'm really interested in Oil Blue, and should try the demo out, but I already have a puzzle game of my own, called Oasis, which I should complete.  :-\

Can I make enormous oil spills? We need oil in DF so we can recreate the gulf coast, but with mermaids instead of fish.

The "snap!" made when switching power cells on the groundwell is oh-so-satisfying!

It looks more like a collection of oil-themed puzzle games than an oil simulation game. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I tend to steer away from indie games after a lot of bad experiences with them.

Heh, I enjoyed Oiligarchy, though. Couldn't win it. It does seem quite tongue-in-cheek. I strongly doubt the developers believed that stuff :P

It really is just a puzzle game with a different skin. (The Oil Blue that is)

Still waiting on a serious industry/mining game.

Another person who couldn't "win" Oligarchy? You know what, this convinced me. I am going to do a recording of me playing Oligarchy and showing you how to win that accursed game.

And I'm telling you, they do believe that stuff. In Oligarchy, there is a law that can be passed to ban windmills to save birds. In the dev notes for the game, they actually link to an article that claims that birds do not in fact get harmed by windmills and that it is a myth created by the oil industry to stop alternative energy.

Oiligarchy was fun. A bit short, though.

Then what are you doing on a forum dedicated to an indie game?

Well, I mean the pay to play type. A great majority of them (of the ones I bought) are fun in the demo, but nothing extra in the full. Especially the ones that hover near the $20 price range. All the gameplay is in the first hour or so of the game, and the full version only offers 200 more hours exactly the same as the first. Bay12 lets you play the full thing, then you give as much money as you think it deserves.

This game pretty accurately fits that description.
