I played it yesterday with a few people from the Bay12 steam group, and it was pretty fun to mess around with, but that's probably the most fun you'll have with it. I'll definitly check it out a little further along the line, or if anyone just wants to have some fun driving rovers around a low gravity environment :D

Low-G environment? It felt to me that the rovers were locked to the ground. For jumping, it felt like a normal jump height taken at slow speed.

Why do I feel that griefers will be insanely capable on a game with this many fuckup-able parts?

Disconnect this thing, destroy that thing, make the repair bot blow up and there you go.

Fun for 1-2 hours tops, especially with friends, other then that, meh.
Which isn't bad for a free game... Personally I've gotten about 4 hours out of it. I was having fun showing my nephews how to play and they thought it was the coolest thing ever.

I got a lot of time out of it, nothing as fun as taking EVERYTHING apart and moving it into a nice pile around the landers to set up a robot race course (robots can't get over tubes).

Yea.
"hey tim, how's the science comming?"
"Not good, we are getting nowhere."
"Try hitting it with a wrench then plugging in a cable somewhere random, then weld something to that thing."
" Hey it worked, MAJOR SCIENTIFIC BREAK THROUGH!"

Reminds me of lab work:
"The distillation setup isn't heating up very well"
"Try applying more tin foil"
"Still not heating up remarkably well"
"More tin foil?"
"That worked, thanks"

I wonder if part of the reason for this release was to see what kind of weird crap the astronauts will do when they're bored on day 473 of living on the moon.

It is mentioned on the official site that this is simply a proof of concept game that something educational yet fun can be made about the space program. NASA does have a bit of a PR battle going on right now with a good portion of citizens saying it's just a waste of money. While the response of making a game could be argued to be a bad call, I'd personally like to see more. Apparently there is at least one more concept in development by the same team. I would like to see this expanded into something a bit more robust, but it looks like a good start at least. My only complaint is that they may have made it a bit too graphically intensive. Schools aren't known for having the best video cards in their computers and educational games such as these are perfect matches for science lesson plans on space exploration.

Hadn't heard about this.  Checked out the Steam page.

Got halfway through the video where they're just wandering around and plugging hoses into things before my mind went oh HELL YES and I started the download.

I'm still expecting this to disappoint me, but dude...  Plugging hoses into things?  Random infrastructure maintenance?  Wandering around barren dunes with an RC robot?  I can hardly wait for the download to finish.

I know it may sound a bit suspect, but this honestly isn't sarcasm.  I just have weird taste in games.

EDIT:  Whoah whoah whoah, wait a second...  There's a win condition?  This thing isn't just a sandbox?  Well, there went my enthusiasm.

It is a free preview of the NASA MMO. You can easily set it to free play mode and do away with the win condition. You're playing a scenario where a meteor strike has damaged some infrastructure and you must repair it in time.

As a proof of concept, it is a lot of fun and, I think, fairly impressive. I didn't know the Unreal engine could do this sort of thing.

The Unreal engine is an incredibly useful and versatile engine.  It can be used and has been used for everything.

In fact, it can even be made into some weird developed-by-amateurs game that requires shading support that my graphics card simply can't provide.  As such, the mysteries of Moonbase Alpha will remain just that to me.  A moonbase.

Ah, I mean mystery.  Yes, that's it.

Anyways...  MMO you say?  That should be interesting.  Seeing several braindead astronauts spouting lolspeek will be a sight to behold...  The shouts of "lvl3 astrophysicist looking for specimen sampling party" will also be highly entertaining.
