What use is half a dwarf? Why, a diplomat of course!
« on: July 06, 2010, 02:50:33 pm »

Urist McNobleadvisor: "Sire, terible news!"
Morul McKingdwarf: "Oh what now? Are the kittens on fire again?"
Urist: "No sire - The diplomat Tobar has suffered an unfortunate accident - he wandered absentmindedly infront of the ballista firing range during firing practice and has been shorn in two. Well, we assume shorn at least in two as we only have his lower body... what are your reccomendations?
Morul: "Not a problem my good dwarf - dispatch what we have left of him as our outpost liason to Delveddwellings at once. Dress it up real nice though, we dont want to seem rude to our pioners in the wilderness now do we?"

Thats how I imagine the conversation going when some genius dispatched a pair of armed and armoured legs as my liason. Autumn rolls around and the caravan shows up. My 3 relativley green macedwarves and thier high master macedwarf militia commander (lucky immigration - also has good teacher skill...) meet the caravan and escort it in, and trade for some lovely booze, weapons, armour and food in exchange for a load of crap rock trinkets. Satisfied by this I check up on how the meeting between my leader and the liason is going. My leader is quite happily sitting on his ass with no job. "Odd" says I, and use the unit screen to find the liason. Tobar is listed as "deceased", even though no alert message apeared telling me this on the bottom. Panicing that I may have a beast of some type, gobbos or a lucky kobold on the loose I scramble the macedwarves to the scene. Nothing. No blood, no vomit, no limbs. No animals. Tobars corpse is on the edge of the map. No blood indicating a fight. Heres the odd thing - Tobar is descirbed in the units screen as "his upper body is missing". No other wounds. On the same tile as this pair of legs is some pretty good kit - Iron cap, chain mail, chain leggins and crossbow with ammo, along with a ful set of clothes. Now whilst I know in 31.08 I will eventually get another liason to replace these random legs, I am really at a loss as to if these legs were actually sent as my liason, or did somthing happen that I missed, bearing in mind there are no combat reports, no animals on the map that present a threat, and no messages giving any clue as to an incident. Anyone else been sent a partdwarf as a liason or am I just lucky?

That is absolutely hilarious. I've heard of no other tales but yours. I've had a partially dismembered one, missing arm and or missing leg, but nothing to the extent of being DOA. Dead on arrival.

There's a bug right now where everything dead shows as missing its upper body.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

Well, that explains the appearance of poor old Tobar, but not why I was sent a corpse as a liason...!

I had a queen once who died of old age before she arrived. Apparently my fortress was a good place for her corpse to be ferried.

Your dialogue reminds me of the adviser from Majesty. Which is actually pretty appropriate.

Had you run a previous fort in this world?

It sounds like it might be old age to me.  It won't realize that someone is dead of old age until they step onto the scene, at the moment.

nope - first one. it was abandoned in winter after mistakenly relying on a frozen brook as a watersource which never melted.

anyway, it appears from reading the bug forum and mantis that this is a known feature issue...

I had a DOA liason once too, but it was back in 31.01. They didn't send a new one before that fort self-destructed.

What probably happend is that the liasion for whatever reason died on his way. If you want to have a good story about it this is what happend:
The liason got on his way towards your fortress. When he was halfway he met a unicorn. This unicorn attacked and killed the liason his men where only able to return his legs and hopped that you could help them burry their frend.

I think this might be a Dwarven practical joke. You know, run up to a fort, ring the doorbell, run away, and when they open the door there's a lower body lying there.

Apparently having a redundant creature entry causes the game to say, "Oh, look, it's crazy world now. Nothing makes sense! Alligators live in houses!"

Then it catches fire, just because.
