I don't think that's IE. Malware that acts like a legitimate program is the new trend, it seems. My last three major infections took the form of fake anti-virus programs. It didn't stop Kaspersky and I from murderizing them, but that's how it is. Also, try Kaspersky sometime. It works well for me. Every day it seems to deny a few trojan programs attempting to install themselves. Under no circumstances should you get CA security. It is fucking useless.

:\

Well thanks for the advice everyone, but sad to say this isn't going to get more interesting.

I just remembered that my cousin downloaded IE because it was recommend in order to play one of his silly flash games. Although that still doesn't explain the fifty three tabs. Anyway, IE is gone from computer again.

Wasn't there something majorly stupid about IE, making it impossible to completely purge?

Just try it, purge IE and then configure your normal exporer.exe windows to show an adress bar, and then just enter a web adress there...

It's been quite some time, but I remember, somewhere from the back of my head, that we're fooked.

Ugh, I know your pain.

My prefeered weapon of choice is Trend Micros: HijackThis
the Cnet reviewer does a good job at explaining what it is.

(If you want to) Make a "system scan and log", and post it here, and I should be able to help you.
Warning!
50% of what it will find is system essential files, do NOT 'fix problems' yourself

A safer weapon is: Unlocker
This requires you to know what file you want gone.

You really aren't thinking like a dwarf.

If you think it is down too far, you move it up until it reaches an acceptable elevation.

One of several reasons I use Linux. However as far as Windows goes, I would recommend Avast for an AV for sure. Spybot Search and Destroy is always good too. I haven't used Malwarebytes much, but I've heard it's good. As far as firewalls go, I'm not really sure, I'm sure others can tell you more though.

Yeah I don't think you can get away from it as they built it into windows exploder. Also you need it if you want to manually update from windows update.com which is bullshit in my opinion.

It's also not true in the case of Windows 7 and Vista, as far as I am aware. They were forced to provide the option of remove it entirely while still retaining base functionality of the operating system.

That's fine, and a lot of people feel that way. I work in the tech support industry, and I can tell you from experience that windows 7 is far more stable than Vista was and actually runs better on older systems than XP does.

wasn't that the whole point of Win7, being a better Vista?

I don't know what their purpose was in designing it, if that's what you're asking. I never personally experienced the multitude of problems reported about Vista when I used it on my own PCs, but I know it had a lot of issues that cropped up in an enterprise environment.

Windows 7 is an upgrade to Vista. Look at the version numbers. Windows Vista: 6.0. Windows 7: 6.1. Microsoft must have realized how much they fucked up with Vista.
