For the design of a fortress I want to make, I need to make a good-looking geometric shape. This is difficult when limited to tiles, so I am asking for some help.

Can anyone recommend a good way to make a five or six pointed star in dwarf fortress?

The idea is to make a large geometric shape with a small tower at each point and each convergence where the lines cross.

A pentagram and the star of David in the same post? That's some contrast right there...

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

I'm not concerned with the religious meaning other people attach to them, I just want to know if anyone has a method of making these shapes practical in a tile-based environment.

You could always just use MSPaint to draw it out.

Zoom in and go to View>Zoom>Show Grid .

You could also just use ratios, which is what I do for most things.

IE, you want a star, so pick a location as the center. Shift + up three times. that's the first point. go back down to the center, and make points at shift + left three times, and shift + right three times- three points down now. Finally, count the distance (rise/run) between the right and top points, and mirror it for the bottom two points.

Holding shift and pressing right/left doesn't do anything unless the cursor is already moving when I tried

I just tested it on mine. I see what the problem is. I use the numpad, not the arrows. It doesn't work with the numpad.

Actually, for me, shift+numpad will work so long as you turn off Num Lock first.  This is particularly useful if you need to jump diagonally.
