Is it just me or...? Aquifer Q
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:17:43 am »

Hi, new poster, vaguely long time lurker here.

I recently decided to try out the new version of DF and was somewhat surprised when I was checking for a good location for my fort that Aquifers seem to be everwhere on soft ground. Is this actually the case? Because if so, it's just made setting up a decent fort a heck of a lot more 'Fun' for me, as I have little to no experience dealing with these things. Is it just including the rivers or something?

Help appreciated.

It's the island format (the new standard), try gen'ing a region world. There's presets built in.

The island format seems to make nearly the whole land an aquifer.

Go to the Dwarf Fortress\raw\objects folder and remove the brackets around all the AQUIFER tags in  inorganic_stone_mineral, inorganic_stone_layer, and inorganic_stone_soil files. This won't affect any existing worlds, but it'll keep any new worlds you gen from having aquifers anywhere.

It's not impossible to have no aquifer and several soil layers, even without tweaking the settings- try looking just beside a mountain range. Generally, there's rock regions, then one soil layer with rock below regions, then several soil layer regions before you hit aquifer.
