3Dwarf Visualizer - a tool to view maps in 3D
« on: December 15, 2007, 07:55:00 pm »

TUTORIAL VIDEO: 3Dwarf Tutorial (~15 meg)
DOWNLOAD: 3dwarf_04f.zip (~10 meg)

NOTE: PLEASE READ THE README!  It explains how to import your maps.  Should work with DF version up to 181.39e.

[CHANGES]
v04:
----
* added compatibility mode for those who experienced glitches (see progconfig.txt for details)
* added moveable sun source!  press 'h' to go into sun mode.  the sun is shown as a large white cube. if you can't see it, zoom out.  while in sun mode, use WASD and RF to control the sun. 'h' leaves sun mode and returns to normal camera<P>v03:
----
* reduced memory usage
* reduced loading time
* added initial mode to config file (see progconfig.txt for details)
* added height scale factor to config file (see progconfig.txt for details)
* added flows
* crash on huge maps fixed (maybe!)
* numerous fixes for missing textures/tiles/etc
* fixed keyboard mapping for slice layers

Testing time!  I finally feel comfortable releasing a public beta of my map visualizer, 3Dwarf.  Please watch the tutorial video to get a feel of what the program is capable of.  Keep in mind this is a beta, and some maps may not display correctly.  I did most of my testing on forest maps, so they will look the best for now.

LIMITATIONS:
We're grabbing landscape data from memory, and at the moment we have no information on things such as doors, items, or flows.  This means you won't see rivers you've dug out, or oceans, but you will still see the terrain that surrounds them.  Also, I've only tested the program with a few maps, so theres a good chance your map will display improperly.  If this occurs, please e-mail me a copy of your map at the address below.

WHAT I NEED:
At this point I could use more maps to test with.  Please zip up the region directory of your fortress and mail it to sinoth@gmail.com.

the tutorial video dies right after you say, "Now we'll hit the plus key to increase our viewing distance.  This allows us to see more of the map at one time."

But seriously, this is amazing.

Holy fuck. That is terrific.

Which version did you make it with? It looks as though constructed walls might be bugged.

YOU HAVE WON LIFE! CONGRATULATIONS! SUPER HAPPY!!!!

Really, top-notch awesomefullness! Now all we have to do is add animated objects, creatures, and weather, and implement it into the game itself!

Hey sinoth, I tried the tool out. Here are some additional screenshots from axegear.

I tried flying through the fort from a first person persective, it felt very cool, but kinda empty, no workshops or dwarves. I noticed the dug-out stairways weren't visible; only the constructed stairways. The river bed isn't right either, I dug out the surface of the brook and your viewer renders it as 'no water' below.

Keep up the good work!

Comments on user interface:

  • The locked mouse thing is really annoying, useful in fullscreen maybe, but a damn frustration in windowed mode til I figured out how to switch it off.
  • Then again, once I had figured out TAB disabled it, it was useful
  • A first person 'walk' mode that understood stairs would be cool
  • Textures are well chosen, they add a lot of detail. The overall colour scheme is a bit bland at the moment though, but I think the content is more important
  • The key L / l didn't appear to do anything for me

    Good god, the Dwarf Fortress community just keeps getting better.

    Do we have a disproportionate number of Computer Science graduates here?

    I think that would be quite amazing to be able to play like that.  Maybe in the future...someday...someday.
