This works with the new version, right? I'm using 39e and just did embark. Shouldn't I be able to use this to visual the landscape before I start building?

I'm getting this error:

Map data is not yet available, make sure you have a game loaded. at map_extract.

This only works when you actually SEE the landscape of your current fortress, with the wagon and dorfs running around and all.

Ah, well yes, I am aware of that. I discovered it works with versions up to 39c. Is there any way to get it to work with 39e? Is there an update in the works?

Are you having trouble getting version f to work?
http://code.google.com/p/dwarvis/downloads/detail?name=3dwarf_04f.rar

It automatically retrieves the config off the internet. And the configuration it retrieves is correct.

I have 4f and I don't see anywhere where it checks for updated configs.  Is this done in the extract process or in 3Dwarf?  (I haven't looked through the code, so I'm assuming 3Dwarf does it?)

I suggest you read the readme file. :)
Also: If the internet check just plain doesn't work out, try downloading the files from http://www.geocities.com/jifodus/tables/dwarvis/ manually and put them in your conf folder.

Ah, for some reason I had an older version of Visualizer. It works fine, now. Thanks!

The "readme" has no information about the updating.  I was more curious, than anything, about where the update check was being run.

3.)  Run map_extract.bat

     It will ask you for:
     a) Confirmation that it has identified the version of DF correctly.
NOTE: At this point it may try to connect to the internet if it does
        not recognize your version.
Permit it in your firewall if you want it
        to update from Jifodus' website.

When I get home, I'll post you what my Readme has in it.  It's basically, just version information, it's a changelog.  I grabbed it from one of the links in this thread, so if it wasn't updated, then that's why.  Unless of course someone decided to defy conventional wisdom and place the instructions below all the change information... which is just odd.

I looooove this program. It is extremely fun searching and navigating through your fortresses. It feels like I am playing Doom, except much more fun. =) Here are some views of my last fortress, Abbeytunneled. http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-3328-abbeytunneled

From the outside, it is a very unassuming fortress built into a glacier.

Awesome! Did you plan that out beforehand?

(It even looks like a Doom level.)

I planned out the basic layout before starting (centered on a magma pipe, large hollow spaces, bedrooms facing the center, main access shaft with bridges). After the layout was established, I continued adding new features as they came to mind in a lazy and patchwork manner  :)

Something that might be a cool feature for the viewer would be an option to restrict the camera from passing through walls to make it easier to navigate through the halls and tunnels. I might try making a video tour of my fortresses if something like that were possible.

That gave me an idea... A 3Dwarf to WAD converter. Or maybe turning 3Dwarf into an FPS that loads everything from creatures to traps from the save and turns them into their equivalents in the FPS.

Well,at least the original doom(s) were not fully 3D (i.e. nothing was ever stacked)...
