My map is exactly 51 Z-levels.  I can go up to 36 above ground (including ground level and "no upstairs constructions" top level) and 15 below.

Right now, the fort is 5 years and a half old.  It took something like 3 or 4 years to get the initial tower up along with the access tower (the small one on the right) and the chute tower (further to the back.)  The three have been built simultaneously using scaffolds to speed things up.

Now, I'm improving on the original design, and carving a funnel out of the surrounding ground to bring more emphasis on the actual drop tower.  More screenshots will follow.

Holy shit.  Everybody should be clicking that spoiler tag above.

Those apartments are awesome.  Can you post a slightly closer shot of the overall floorplan?

this thread is depressing. it makes me feel that my project is small and unuseful.

On a tangent: holy heck that's one tall mountain behind your fort there!

OK, as requested, the 3D of the rest of the fort.  It's minuscule compared to the norm since all I've done in its six years of life is focus on basic defense and the tower itself.  Maybe if I feel like it, I'll build up some improvements and try to make it more impressive.  I've got a lot of stone lying around.

First, an overhead map of the fort.  The drop tower and the outer walls are easily visible from the outside.  Everything is protected by a dry moat, but with no river, it's impossible to feed it the water to make it become deadly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A main drawbridge services trade caravans and is almost always raised between trading runs.  On the side are four corridors, each lined with roughly 40 cage traps, with plans to fill the gaps and expand to 70.  The corridors all lead to a vestibule courtyard, where another drawbridge can be raised in a last ditch effort if things go really, really sour.  Finally, a set of access stairs have been placed under the main bridges in order to allow someone trapped in the dry moat to escape, or for the military to dive into and knock out invaders.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A funnel has been dug around the tower to emphasize its height and to give the impression that it really stands on a tiny bit of stone.  Since the lower part was dug but not constructed, an improvement could be made such that these visible parts become constructed obsidian to make the entire visible part of the tower be uniform.  The tower is surrounded by ramps and floors engraved with the fort's history.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On the far side is the access tower, through which cages are transported to the stockpile at the top of the drop tower.  On the near side is a chute in which enemy weapons are tossed to ground level.

Corridor of death!

FREEFALL!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At the very bottom is a small funnel shape to end the tower and provide more rebound to the various body parts.  Viewing the Z-level right above the first ring of ramps makes a whole bunch of gibs flash on the screen as the victims explode in a magnificent shower of blood.  At the very bottom is an artificial body of water connected to the meditation chamber of the fortress.  The impact from falls is so violent that some victims' chunks actually manage to bounce out of the water and into the meditation room.  I've seen it happen on regular occasion!

The phrase "no terminal velocity" comes to mind. (In regards to the physics simulation.)

Those goblins must be going fast when they hit the bottom.

I couldn't find a utility to merge movies together and couldn't find any option to extend movie length past 20 seconds...  So here's Liontower's Drop in two parts!

Perhaps tomorrow I'll make a FRAPS of it instead, with the tileset and everything for extra details gibbiness.
