At first I wanted to build an airship (while the cave-in code is still very lenient), but it was too big and dropped FPS to a crawl. So I thought about building something smaller and more manageable.

The structure is quite functional and can support 70 dwarves (and 2 nobles) with room for storage and workshops. It is protected from almost all ground based attacks.

That is amazing...  God I wish I could build stuff like that.

The ramps have always just been an approximation, unfortunately.  DF is able to generate some ramp situations that I think are just flat out physically impossible...
Whoa, really? Like what?

Although I guess since the outdoor "ramps" are supposed to be approximations of sloping hills, you could get some weird things going on.

A large part of the problem here are u-bends and ramps, as shown here.
Top level:
Code: [Select]
,."
.▼,
"▼.
▼▼▼
∙∙∙
Bottom level:
Code: [Select]
▓▓▓
▓▲▓
▓▲▓
▲▲▲
,."
There is not really a good way to display these as is, unless you code in two special cases to display.
1. Two unconnected upper levels.
2. Two upper levels across from each-other

Awesome! Is it hollow, or just a massive statue sorta thing?

EDIT: Also, I'd love to have people upload their more sophisticated construction projects, in saved world format, that is, to the DFFD.

Its hollow. In the final design I could add floors and recover that rather large amount of floor space. Now that we can build in large rectangles, placing walls and the like is no longer as painful. Right now its at the design stage. I work out designs using paint and then build it in DF. Using 3dwarf to render it I then refine the shape until it looks right.

When complete it will look like the starship Tempest from a webcomic that I like. The webcomic itself is Outsider which you can find here:
http://well-of-souls.com/outsider/

The forum thread where you can watch the progress is located here: (the relevant stuff starts on page 7)
http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122876&page=7&pp=15

Right now the complete statue would be possible with the current DF engine, but so impractical that I wouldn't even try yet. For one thing the whole statue would require around 120 Z levels and a 9X12 map. While you CAN find maps like that, they slow down the computer to the point where it is unworkable.

My hope is that one day Toady will add adjustable Z levels to the game. To make the statue really come alive, it would be epic madness to have a visualizer that takes into account colour. Either the official incarnation of the 3dwarf utility or an updated 3dwarf itself.

And since we have a new version release, i present to you, with the help of the awesome Jifodus:

Link below. vvvv

This tool can read core.xml files that you copy into the conf folder AND it will try to grab the config from the internet if it cannot connect to the running DF correctly.

If it can't find a config it'll simply output an error. That's normal and expected, simply means Jifodus hasn't updated his webspace yet. Just wait a day and try again.

Sinoth is working on his own update, however, until that is done and as long as Jifodus stays on the ball, you won't have to download Dwarvis again.  :D

Awesome!

It's already uploaded! Enjoy!

Edit: Ok, apparently the offsets are different. I'll have to fix it, it'll be gone until then.

Ok, I've uploaded a more correct version. However, the offsets are currently hard coded in map_extract.pl.

So you'll have to open up map_extract.pl and find:
Code: [Select]
    $tile_type_offset        = 0x005E;
    $tile_designation_offset = 0x0260;
    $tile_occupancy_offset   = 0x0660;
And replace with
Code: [Select]
    $tile_type_offset        = 0x0062;
    $tile_designation_offset = 0x0264;
    $tile_occupancy_offset   = 0x0664;

Mithaldu has fixed the issue with map_extract and here now is the working 3Dwarf:

And yes, I did steal the above from his post and just change the url.

The last demonstrations of craftdwarfship are very impressive. Good work guys :o

My screenshot is not very impressive. I mainly post it, because I mentioned it before. So finally I have a layer of water above a layer of lava and it doesn't work. My plan was to get rid of lava puddles with a depth of 1 and I recieve a lot of steam and solid blocks of obsidian instead  >:(. Nice obsidian factory, but I have no need for obsidian.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The left water aqueduct is used to irrigate my outside farms. I used it once to irrigate my farms. Did I mention, that I love pointless constructions?  ;D
The stone floor of the entrance is smoothed. A few hundred tiles. You can see a small disturbance above the tree. This is a pig iron floor, around 100 tiles. It wasn't planed, but my Duke demanded pig iron items and I had to get rid of all the pig iron bars (no need for steel after HFS). He finally managed that the fortress ran out of iron. After his last demand, the fortress ran out of Dukes.
