Civ 4
« on: July 04, 2010, 10:24:05 am »

So because Civ 5 is coming out soon I decided to install Civ 4, problem is that disc 2 isnt working and I get an error when trying to install Gandhi_Early_Intro. Holy fuck I am angered. How can I change this?

Also a general about Civ 4, stories and the such.

Generally a big fan of the game and got it and all of the expansions on Steam. Some of the mods, including the Fall from Heaven 2 stuff, is pretty cool too.

WRT Gandhi error: Is the disc scratched by any chance? If not... I really have no idea.

I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

You could try getting some scratch remover and hope that fixes it, but if it doesn't there's nothing you can really do other than get a new disk or something.

Got it off Steam recently, no idea what the fuck I'm doing.

Yesterday I went to war with the Aztecs and my scout over there said that their civ was pretty weak.  I canceled open boarded, transgressed with the scout, caused the war, sent in my warriors, and suddenly they have a huge army with 3 cities.  What the hell?  Does the AI cheat or did I miss something?  There was maybe a 6 turn gap between causing the war and getting my warriors over there.

Also:  how do you make use of archers?  I try to use their first strike ability and they're a tile away but can't seem to attack without moving onto the enemy itself.  Then they try to go against a melee unit with no support from their spear or axe buddies and get slaughtered, so what gives?  How do I attack with a whole stack vs just one unit at a time?

First strike doesn't do what you think it does. You always fight in melee one unit at a time. First strikes give your guys a free roll at the beginning of combat for some extra damage.

Yeah I'd agree with Trorbes, try and find a disc buffer or some scratch remover. Either that or a lot of times video rental places and video game stores have a machine that they'll let you use so you can call places near you and ask.

I'm pretty sure the AI cheats, but not to the point where cities and armies will appear out of nowhere. It's likely their army was in a different part of their territory and the 6 turns gave them enough time to get back.
As far as my memory goes, archers can't hit stuff a tile away. They're mainly good for defense, especially defending cities.
I think attacking with a whole stack is the default when you click on the square with the stack on it. If you want to attack with individual units you click on their portraits to select them individually. Sorry my exact memory of it's a little hazy since I haven't played in a while.

The AI doesn't cheat anymore in Civ4, though they do get bonuses or penalties depending on the difficulty levels. In Civ3, the cheating was really bad, and people had screencaps of them building irrigation in the middle of massive, dry plains.

What made you think that the Aztecs were weak, by the way?

Six turns is actually a lot of time for Aztecs to build up an army. They probably used the Slavery civic to rushbuild some soldiers. Also, they have the Aggressive trait, which makes their army more powerful by nature.

You attacked the Aztecs. Montezuma is a lunatic. He will place a large emphasis on armies. Also, he probably was in Slavery and sacrificed a whole lot of population for a defensive army. It's his favorite civic. Also, keep in mind, size of military is not the only thing that matters for military power calculations - some buildings and also the size of your cities.

I always thought that stack attack wasn't available in Civ IV (unless I've missed something). As far as I know, moving a whole stack onto a unit will cause the unit with the largest chance of victory to attack. If he succeeds, the rest of the stack follows.

Or they had the civ that allows you to pay lots of money to finish something in one turn. You know they are the Aztecs, they have alot of gold. I hope Civ 5 has those army things from Civ Revolution, those where awesome. Thanks for the replies guys.

Possible if they have the pyramids. If they don't, then Universal Suffrage is waaaaaaay into the future.

Just torrent it, chap. The latest patch removed CD protection, so no need for a crack or anything.

Oh, and don't archers get bombardment like tanks and bombs? Or something similar to it? I think they did in FfH2, and I played that more than the vanilla game.

not in vanilla civ4 they don't. they're pretty much just melee units that get a chance of doing extra damage and defend cities really good.
