Boatmurdered - The Animation
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:54:14 am »

(I'm hoping this is the right place for this topic, if not please move it accordingly!)

Hello my friends. Myself and a fellow animator are starting a short and simple animation based on the Boatmurdered story. We hope to have it done over the next 2 weeks.
I myself have attempted to start playing DF about 5 times over the last few years and have finally cracked it and loving it. I only recently stumbled onto Boatmurdered and was really charmed by it. My collaborator and I are animation students currently on holidays so we thought this would be a good project. It's going to be without dialogue and have simple animation. Here is an example of my work and of my buddies.
Mine: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/539899
Buddy: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/539900

I hope you guys will enjoy it and if any of you are interested you can follow the production of it here. http://simoncottee.blogspot.com/

I have become hopelessly addicted to DF and I figure I better hone that energy!
Cheers guys!

*** I'll post any interesting further developments here also.

First concept BATCH

Wow, I am SERIOUSLY interested in that. Awesome! :D Your animations are crazily pro, too. Looking forward to seeing more information on it, will watch your blog-- but you should certainly update on this thread now and again, too!

Awesome! I was a little nervous you guys would respond negatively to the whole affair! (New to the forums and community and all).
I should have some concept art up later today and you can start seeing the art direction.
Regarding to story:
I'm planning to simplify it heaps (due to time and animation limitations). But I plan on hitting the main points, which in my mind are -
- 7 Arrive and begin construction, turns into thriving mountain home
- First terrifying elephant attack, weighs heavily on leaders mind
- Large scale elephant attacks over time, place starts going to hell
- Strained leader begins construction on large scale magma trap
- Elephants are now legendary war beasts
- Leader has lost it, all he does is engraves images of horrifying elephants
- Magma released, burns the earth/elephants/elf caravan? and sets fire to the mountain home
- Leader catches fire, goes berserk, kills someone and dies, everyone mad and rioting
- Final guy stands in the flaming ruins, a single girl happily plays in bones. He leaves

I really wanted to have goblins in there, but I figured due to constraints and the fact it's silent it might not be very clear. To me Boatmurdered is the terror of elephants and a mad king/leader. I also want to use the existing boatmurdered art as the basis for some of the shots. As a homage.
I've got to track down some good music for it. I'm thinking the Omen theme might synch well. (Mostly towards the end) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OkFLdPaoZQ

NINJA: Ignore that, they look good those videos. Good luck with making the Boatmurdered flashs.

The links were examples of their work, not related to Boatmurdered.

Also, this is an amazing idea and would love to see it done. I hope you at least add sounds, aside from just music.

Looking into modding DF? This forum guide & wiki guide may still be a good start!

Yeah we will see about audio. that can be a pretty huge process and if done badly is worse than if there was only music.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

You can't forget the race to create elaborate tombs and monuments and frequent flooding of the world.
